October 18, Good morning Montana
« on: October 18, 2008, 05:08:49 AM »
Good morning everyone, it a warm 52 degrees and cloudy this morning...one week to go until deer season.

Went out and sighted in the rifles yestrerday.

The drill is I sight the wifes rifle in and she finishes it.  This is in itself a real challenge as her rifle is a M-70 youth model with a 10 1/2 inch length of pull.  As a full size adult I had to be real careful to not get scope eye.  By the way guys if you realy want you dear one to hunt with you, you will get her a rifle of her own and get it cut down to fit her.

I sat down and fired three shots with her gun and was 4 inches high and 3 inches left.  Well the left was no surpise, the wind was blowing from the right at about 35 to 40 mph...such is shooting in Montana.  The group such as it was, was about 3 inches, not good.

I cranked in a little down elevation just a bit of right windage and shot again.  Much better a 1 inch group and only 2 inches left and 2 inches high.

I added 1 inch windage and handed the rifle to the wife and she shot.

As we walked up to the target is appeared she had only hit it twice, then we got closer...well the target can talk for itself.

Wow, this gal can shoot! This is Federal 100gr SP--remember women can't shot and factory ammo isn't very accurate.T hat is a three shot 3/4 inch 100 yard group...not bad!!

What about my rifle, it's sighted in, that's all you need to know. enough said.

When working with Faye's rifle which is also chopped really short for her I find it helpful to do a couple things before shooting it. First I add a slip on pad which will add a full inch or more to the length of stock. I then use a PAST Magnum recoil pad on my shoulder to add still more length and even at times will wear a skeet vest as well over that to add still more length. It really helps to get that short rifle out to a more acceptable length for me shooting it.

Wind blow in Montana?  Not sure I ever noticed. ;D  Doesn't seem to be calm to many days here.  Guess we all just learn to adjust to the wind, if ya shoot enough, seems to be instinctive.  DP
