Ruger mkII 270 loads please
« on: October 19, 2008, 12:37:13 PM »
I have been trying the 130gr sst with 54.4gr of imr 4831 and wlr primers. This load is allover the target like two will be close and the third two inches from it just wondering if this load could be the problem or maybe the scope. I donot think it is the shooter beacause the same day I shot the 270 I shot my abolt 25/06 and group around half and inch so thanks for any help or suggestions

from what you have described, I would look at the scope and scope mounts. and take a look at the barrel crown to make sure its not dinged.

I have a MkII 270 and have put around 250 rounds through it in the last 5 years.  I dont even bother to reload for it, as she will shoot the 130grain Win Silver box into a 3 shot clover leaf a 100y (at least it will now with the timney ;D)  I have had an issue with it before where she would open up to like a VERY random 21/2-3 inch group...drive me nuts!  I was totally befuddled and then I grabbed a quarter out of my pocket and turned one of the ruger mounts darn near 1/2 a turn!  Brought her right back!  That may be your issue.

I would make sure that the bases and rings are tight before changing anything. My Ruger MKII .270 shoots very well. With almost all of my rifles, I pillar bed in Acraglas, free float the barrel, adjust the trigger and test. If it won't shoot well then, something is almost certain to be amiss with the scope.

Just a few tips on scope mounting. I lap bottom half of the rings, optically center the scope, mount securely, bore sight and test fire. Of course as Ruger rings have no adjustment, lapping and bore sighting is the only choice except shimming. I have never had a problem zeroing a Ruger rifle with Ruger rings and they are very secure. It does pay to buy a proper screwdriver tip from Brownell's to fit the attachment screws.

I shoot 130 grain Ballistic tips in my Ruger MKII loaded in Winchester Brass, Fed Primers, and 58.0 Grains of Reloder 22.

I am willing to bet its the actual scope giving you problems.  What kind is it?

I have a Ruger M77 MKII in 270 Winchester using Ruger factory rings and Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x40mm scope.

I don't load 130 grain, but 150 grain bullets with 54.0 grains of IMR-4831 after starting at the minimum and working my way up.

This setup shoot consistently MOA every time, nothing was adjust from the factory, stock or trigger.

I've had my best luck shooting Reloader 22 under a sierra 130.  56.0 grains chrono's 2900 and shoots under an inch in my rifle.

Another vote for RL22. I shoot both the 130 Nosler BT and 150 Partition with 57.0 grains of RL22. Both will shoot under an inch in my rifle. I don't suggest this as a starting load as I seat bullets to within .015 inch of rifling which is over spec. The 130 chronos 2989 and the 150 chronos 2916 in my rifle - both mean velocity.

I do not hunt with the BT but I shoot it for practice as I have a bunch of them and it shoots to the same point of impact as the 150. The 150 is my standard hunt load.

I think you may find that the .270 will shoot several types and weights of bullets to near the same point of impact at different velocities -  contrary to many other calibers. Point of impact varies widely with different bullets in my .338 M70, but all shoot very well.

Good luck, You will love the .270.
