270 Pro Hunter Group

After shooting 5 rounds sighting scope I decided to try group. 140 gr. Sierra boat tail pushed by 55.5 gr. IMR 4831 and 200 CCI primer this is what it does at 100 yards. I was shooting off of sand bags forend nothing but shoulder on back. I think I've found my deer killing load.  ;) Don't tell me Thompson can't build a 28" shooter cause I couldn't be happier since I have 200 rounds loaded it was my Winchester model 54 favorite.  ;D What do you think is it ok?

This is the third time out 2 other times were just barrel break in about 40 rounds down the barrel! I need to mention how sweet the 270 is after my 300 mag elk hunt. I could shoot the 270 all day!

Not out of pro Hunter but they were doing 2965 out of my 24" nickle steel winchester model 54.

I guess I could dig out my old crono and but some batteries in and check them out!

OMG, it doesn't get any better than that! I'm in the process of finding the right ammo for my .270 ProHunter barrel and don't reload. Have you had any luck with factory ammo that you would recommend? I've tried Federal Vital shock 130 gr Triple Shock X-bullets and 130 gr. Nosler Partition bullets and found them to shoot fair (just under 2" groups at 100 yds.)

hogrdr, you must be mistaken, had to have been shot out of another rifle, possibly the Knight KP-1 since we all know Encores have accuracy problems and the KP-1 fixed them all.

JUST KIDDING hogrdr, I have the similar results with my factory Encore barrels as well.

IMR-4831 is my magic powder for my 270 Winchester also.

Sorry I,ve never shot factory ammo in my 270 as I had piles of 20 year old reloads for my 270 and 22-250 so can't help you there! As stated in the past I have not shot guns in as many years till I decided to go on a muzzelloader hunt last December and ended up with a Pro Hunter and got some kind of addiction for barrels! The load I used was my winchester model 54 favorite and even thought the 140 gr. had less muzzel volocity the ballistics were far better than the 130 gr. I don't even know if Sierra still makes the bullet but I think with 200 I have enough to last. After a white tail hunt in Missouri in November I'll go to work on the 22-250 and maybe it will like the load I shot in my Ruger M77 bull barrel. If not I'll dust off the old RCBS press and dies and work something up.

I shot Winchester Super X 180 gr. these are also old bullets but they are factory in my 300 mag. got about 2" groups but I'm not going to lie there is a flinch when I pull the trigger. I've never got hit but bythe time I got scope sighted my shoulder hurt like hell. I'm sure It could do better but it only has about 30 rounds in it and I wanted it for elk hunt kind of a rushed deal.

Good luck on your hunt this November in Missouri. I hear that's one of the best states to get a trophy whitetail! Bring one home and show us the pictures!

I just bought myself a .270 Pro-Hunter bbl (28" fluted SS) and will be working up loads for it as well. This is my 1st .270 ever so I have absolutely NO experience with this ctg. What kind of recoil can I be looking at?  I find my 24" .308 bbl to jump. That's with 165gr boolits :).  Thanks in advance

Recoil is not hard at all but it does jump a little I can shoot this thing all day with no discomfort. I've been shooting 270 all my life don't waste any money on anything but 140 gr. bullet for large game. Ballistics are far superior than 130 & 150 IMHO I've killed Mule Deer,Elk,Whitetail,Antelope. ;D However with my new found love of hunting Whitetail and not shooting 300 + yards across our Rocky Mountains the 150 might hit harder at close range. Still I've killed 3 Whitetail with the 140's 1 bang flop 2 bang run about 40 yds. then butt passes there frontend. ;D

If interested I can dig out my old reloading data before I got my 22-250 I would reload 100 gr HP for coyotes I could watch bullet hit with little to no recoil leaving barrel at around 3300 fps.

The load of 55.5 grains of 4831 pushing a 140 gr. Sierra SPBT worked best in three of the 4 different 270's I owned start around there and give it a try maybe save you some money trying allot of different loads. If you don't like the bullet I'll buy them off you!

I did nothing special had box of old factory Winchester Super X 130 gr. I took out 4 times shooting 5 shots each time more for brass to load 3 shells in 1/2 gr. increments. Cleaned after each outing first few times took allot to get clean. Loaded up three shells started with 54 gr. then 54.5, 55, 56 had my old reloads at 55.5 Took Pro Hunter out with bench started with 54 gr shot three shot groups cleaning after each group and letting barrel cool 30 min. between each group. After 55.5 gr which grouped similar to picture above I quit. Went back out next day shot 56 gr. cleaned shot another 55.5 gr. grouping then shot 4 more to sight scope 2" high at 100 yds cleaned let cool shot group in picture posted. Then went on whitetail killing spree in Missouri 3 shots 3 deer. Farthest a little over 80 yds with small window but had all the confidence in this gun!

All shot under 1" with 54 being worst 56 same as 55.5 with 1 shot just outside other two. I have 200 rounds reloaded from old days so I've got allot of killing to do before needing to reload.

Geesh Hog, I feel bad that you had to do all the work LOL, But I appreciate it fully and will try the data you provided  ;)
I will be mounting a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-10x40 scope with Warne base and Burris Signature rings.
I guess now I'll have to go shopping for some dies (neck sizer) and components. Thanks again Hog. I'll post results when it gets warmer,
