The action/bolt is a 98 large ring Mauser. Styer made some of the best. It's a military configuration receiver, but many were reworked for civilian use both by individuals and various companies. I assume someone fitted the winchester barrel to it as part of its sporterizing, bent the bolt and added the adjustable trigger.

Is it really the extractor that's the problem, or is it the ejector? Does the round come out of the chamber when you pull the bolt back? If it's just the ejector, it's a <$10 part that's easy to install.

Exactly what does the receiver crest say on it? It looks like a beautiful rifle, and $200 was more than likely a very good price for it.

It is the Ejector, the bullet Extractor works fine. I will pick one of these up.

as for the crest it looks like an Eagle and says Republica Mexicana 1912

Thanks for the Help!

Is it a large ring ? I thought Mexico used small ring Mausers, but I may be thinking about Spain. I think all the small ring mausers cocked on closing the action, large rings cocked on opening.

I converted a couple of small rings in 7mm once and actually they worked out very nice, since they are a little slimmer and lighter. They were bad mouthed back then because they cocked on closing, which never bothered me, and because they lacked a safety lug that the large rings had. I didn't keep it because the twist in the barrel was for long bullets and I couldnt get it to shoot well with more standard bullets.

Is it a large ring ?

 Yes. Without a doubt.

BTW, all 98's (small & large ring) have a safety lug and cock on opening. The small ring actions you had were 95's or earlier.

Measure the diamiter of the reciever. I believe it is a Mexican mauser which would be best decribed as a small ring 98.

I think that you will find that there are two model 98's with the small ring a Model from Mexico and a special apline model from Germany (G40)?. Cannot recall the model numbers of hand.

Let's put this one to bed....

On the left is a large ring 98 (Styer, no less), and on the right, we have a small ring 98...

Note here that the large ring is kinda large (note the step in the receiver), and the small ring is, well, smaller than the large ring...

 Here are the measurements...

 LARGE...

 small...

Which matches the original poster's action?

Yes, the large ring and small ring '98's are the same length, and use the same trigger guard assembly. There is an aftermarket aluminum trigger guard available for them, saves a few ounces.

Hmmmm, I have a pre-war K98 with the 660 (made by Steyr) code.  Interesting - I don't think they made that many of them.

Just to add a little confusion to this thread. I have a surplus military large ring 98 in 7mm but it is a short action. I found it very difficult to find a stock for it as the mounting screws are spaced more like a 96. I do not know how many short action 98s were made but this one is really a slick action and even though the barrel throat is so shot out it is difficult to reload the brass it regularly puts the bullets in the same hole at 100 yards. I did find a 96 synthetic stock that I managed to cobble into a fair fitting stock with a lot of carving and bedding material. It was a closed magazine stock that I cut out to fit the original magazine close out plate and filled in with bedding material. It is not the most beautiful rifle but when hunting it is one of my favorites. The action was actually made by CZ.
