What Happened?
« on: October 20, 2008, 04:56:38 AM »
I was shooting with my buddy on Friday.  He has a brand new Savage .243 with a heavy barrel.  It has the Accu-Trigger.  He likes it, and it shoots ok for him.  He has had no trouble with it.  It hasn't been out of the stock(black tupperware)  He hasn't adjusted anything.

He let his uncle shoot it, and 3 out 4 times it misfired.  You could hear the click but the primer wasn't struck at all.

My buddy went back to shooting, it and had no problems.

What happened?

A few more details would be helpful. For example was it handloads or factory loads you were using?

Factory ammo....

I'm not sure what brand.  He shoots Remington & Hornady.

It probably happened that his uncle wasn't engaging the part of the trigger that sticks out, and was pulling the other part of the trigger first. If that happens, it won't go bang.

I don't see how it would be possible to do that, but I guess anything can happen.

I don't see how it would be possible to do that, but I guess anything can happen.

I'll take a stab at explaining it Swampman, but if anyone here can fill in the details or be more specific, please do come forward and post away.

The AccuRelease (that little blade) must be very close to being fully depressed in order for the firing pin to fully drop, otherwise, the blade will stop the sear before it releases the firing pin. In other words, it sounds like the firing pin is dropping (and I believe it does in fact start moving which explains the sound of the misfire), but the blade is actually stopping the sear before the firing pin gets fully released. It happens when the trigger is pulled sideways and back rather than straight back (which would fully depress the Accurelease blade). Following are two pictures and explanations taken directly from the Savage website that might make it clearer:

(Figure 1: AccuRelease must be completely depressed or rifle cannot fire)

(Figure 2: In case of trigger jar off, AccuRelease blocks sear which prevents rifle from firing.)

This sounds more plausible!  Thanks!

Thanks. I'm not the best at explaining things, but that's what I meant... I tried it on my rifle when I first bought it, just to see if it was so. I also tried it on my grandson's 30-06, and the results were the same.

Hey this is an excellent thread and should be made into a sticky maybe. I just bought a MKll GLY .22 for my son.  He had several failures to fire and if I hadn't read this the other day I would have thought I had a problem gun. My son is 7 and this gun is a bit big for him yet.  I think he has trouble reaching the trigger blade consistently. I fired the gun for 10 or so shots with nary a problem.

So my boy will have some growing and learning to do. But since he's left eyed, I wanted to get him properly equipped when I had the opportunity.  Its a pretty nice rifle and I can shoot it pretty well. Almost wish they offered it with an 18 inch barrel and slimmer pistol grip.  As it is, just add a recoil pad and it will be fine for his adult life too.

Thanks guys for a good discussion.

Personally I would have no confidence in a rifle that I have to pull the trigger exactly right in order to get it to go off.

Well then Swampy, you just more or less admitted that you don't care about proper trigger control. :D

That's not it at all. You will learn proper trigger control for your various firearms. My 7mm Rem Mag is set very light for others, but just fine for me, and I know how to control it. My T/C Hawken has a double set trigger, and I have it set to ounces, rather than pounds, but it is still controllable. My Savage is set as low as I can get it, and I like the idea of having to put my finger in the same place every time on that rifle to make it fire. I know that when I get the proper grip, sight alignment, breathing, and my finger where it's supposed to be when it's supposed to be there that all will be right with the world and a hole will appear on the target where it's supposed to.

But what happens when you try to open it and the handle comes off?

Thanks for the detailed answer Skunk, you nailed it. The pics make it clear. Alot of times it will also do this if you try to over-lighten the accutrigger adjustment spring. All you have to do is turn it in a 1/4 turn and it is good to go. Especially with the Varmint guns with the lightweight spring.
