.45 and PB loads smoke!!
« on: October 20, 2008, 05:59:47 PM »
I had a bunch of left over loads with different powders and bullets ,NOT enough of any for a box. The components were no longer on my shelves, so I decided to shoot them up for practice and reload with stuff I do have on hand. It was a cool CALM day and I was shooting in late afternoon, near dusk. Those loads with Hornady 200 swc's and PB looked like I was using BLACK powder. One guy thought I'd set the booth on fire. Another guy saw the target and commented that I needed MORE practice. When I showed him a hand full of what I was shooting, he said "YOU CAN"T JUST SHOOT ANYTHING IN THAT GUN! You need good ammo to get good groups.! Five or so different loads and I kept them on a foot square target! I was quite pleased with myself thankyou! And I have a bunch of brass to prep and reload to boot!

Well, regardless of what I think of another's shooting (unless I'm just floored by the accuracy) I keep my mouth shut. If a guy is out there shooting at 25yds and they are all over the target but he seems to be trying for all he is worth, its not my place to tell him he should move to a shorter range. No one likes a busybody on the range, if I'm ask I'll give my opinion.

Worry not what other think of your shooting, most folks that run off at the mouth cannot do much better.

Thanx for the kind words. I WAS surprised at the wide variance the bullets went into. I expected a larger than "normal" group because the loads were mixed. I didn't expect a foot square pattern though.! At least the loads SEEMED to stay in a small area, the individual "groups" were OK, but the aggragate(?) of all the groups was quite large. The different bullets would put different holes in the paper, so I knew where they were hitting. I could still hit a guy SOME where in the torso at 25 yards (I THINK?), I just might not be able to hit him where I really want to!  Just a thought for those of US who keep a box of what ever is handy in the night table. :)

If you had a good time that's what its all about.

I don't use PB much any longer. I used to load it for some of my Cowboy loads and still do for an old 32-20 lever gun I have. I just scoop it with a old LEE powder dipper and add a 115lead bullet. It shoots great, the kids love shooting it, sounds/shoots like a .22 and mine smokes too!!

Good shooting!!

Either my mind went blank sometime in the last couple of years or I just don't know.
Either way I have to ask-what is PB?

It also stands for plain base bullets but in reading the OP I suspect it is instead neither but the powder known as PB. He said he was using Hornady SWC bullets but then Hornady does offer a lead bullet so I dunno.

Yep, PB powder and {PB (PB)} plain base lead bullets! Hornady and Lee bullets, also some D&J 230 grainers were in the mix! The Lee 165's cut a perfect circle while the D&J's are round nosed, and punched a ragged hole. The Hornady bullets were SWC's and cut a smaller circle than the Lees's and left a dark smudge around the hole. The magazines and gun were left filthy by the PB residue. Not the lead ,but the powder!

I've never liked PB powder. Like you said in handguns it smokes seriously. I used up the last of my four pound can (all I've ever owned of it) in 28 gauge skeet loads. They smoked also.
