I was in my favorite "speak easy" (a.k.a. gun shop) this afternoon and they had an Interarms Mauser in .270 Winchester for $450.00. You could tell it had been hunted with some. It had a Mauser 6X-40 scope on it with very fine crosshairs. I don't like the scope, but I know I could unload it on eBay. The bore looked nice and the action was very smooth. The stock was a graceful dark walnut with cut checkering & a black forend tip. I know I can get them down on the price some. You guys can then give me hell about owning a .270, but hey what are friends for. I really liked the looks of the gun. Should I, or shouldn't I?

If you really liked it, and can get them down some to boot go for it! I won't give you too much flak, the 270 is a good one.

Well normally I drop a rifle like it's red hot when I see the .270 markings on the barrel but this one spoke to me.

The one thing I've learned in my 45+ years of gun buying and trading is that if one speaks to you it should go home with you. That's a rule I try not to break regardless of brand or type of firearm it is. If it calls to me to take it home I sure enough try to do so. That's how that danged $12,500 Kreighoff followed me home one day. It turned out it really wasn't for me after all but it spoke to me I listened and we had a time together and then it moved on to the next person it spoke to.

Better watch out Swampy, you shoot that thing and you will find out why all us 270 fans are...well, fans. You might not shoot that Remmy 30-06 again.

Love the .270--almost as versitile as the .30-06----and a heck of a lot easier on the shoulder.

The .270 is a great caliber! Nice flat shooting caliber, plenty of punch on the other end. Don't see why that caliber would scare you away from a good rifle that shines on you.

Now of course we want to see a nice photo of the Mauser

but if I were you I would keep the scope, if you don't like it put another on it but keep it just in case you decide to sell it at some later point in time than you can put that Mauser branded scope back on it

What happened to trying to simplify your life with one centerfire rifle, one shotgun, one rimfire and maybe a handgun?

Swamp with a .270 the rifle he said he'd never own and that is not as good as a .243?

What is this world coming to?

And it's not even a Remington.

Don't think I've ever bought a gun that I didn't like. After a dozen years or so I might not like them as much, but a new gun (to me) is a pride and joy. Wonder how a new wife would work? I've got one that is 35 years into a marriage and she still works, though I am retired. What else could a man ask for - except maybe some new guns ever year or two.

I got it home today. I spent about an hour cleaning the barrel. It was filthy. I really like it!

I think I'm going to get a Bushnell 3200 Elite 3-9X40 with the gloss finish to go on it.

You would be very hard pressed to find a finer rifle. The interarms mauser actions are top notch make no mistake about it. As for the caliber, it is a damn fine one. It will never let you down. As far as the scope, another excellent choice. The Elete series are fine optics for sure. I have a mildot 24 power on my sendaro and have been very pleased with it. Please let us know how its shoots, i know im not alone in saying...we must know.

I have always been under the impression that nothing beats a mauser action for a sporting rifle. That probably explains my soft spot for pre 64s, and MKIIs. I have always wanted an interarms in 7x57 but around me they go for closer to a grand. YOU MADE A GREAT BUY!

For all those who worry that Swampy has lost his love for Remington, if memory serves after Interarms went out of business, Charles Daly started importing barreled actions and full rifles from the same factory. Charles Daly lost the contract to Remington which is currently importing the same Mauser barreled actions to be mated with American stocks at a Remington plant in Tennessee (I think.) So, you see, Swampy bought the daddy of the current Remington 798. It is still all in the family.

I do hate the cartridge, but I really like the rifle. If it isn't accurate, I may have it rechambered or trade it off.

I don't think that you could rechamber it to anything else that you'd like in a .270 bore. I'd send it out and get the barrel rebored and rechambered, maybe in 30-06?

I'd probably go with the .35 Whelen if there's enough wall thickness in the barrel to take the bigger bore. Be a heck of a BIG game rifle...moose, elk, big bears....
