A few weeks back I loaded some 30-40 cases with 22 grains of 2400 and a 175 cast GC'd bullets. The load seemed to shoot accuratley from an old sporterized Kreag I had sitting around. I ordered some new brass and loaded up 50 rounds, today I took it to the range. At 50 yards the rifle with that load will print 2MOA without fail. I'd like to try it at 100 but can not see the target well enough to try for groups. I did however manage to bur some small dirt clods that I could get focused upon at 100 yards. The load chronos out at 1720 FPS.
I think that rifle will be placed back in service. It is a whole lot cheaper to shoot than jacketed bullets, easy on the shoulder and still warm enougho take down the deer out here in Va.

Shot my first deer with a loaner 30-40.
I have been wanting one for years for that reason.

If I ever get the chance for a rifle hunt of anything deer-sized, my Krag is the only thing I own (besides shotgun w/slug) that fits the bill. I guess I could set my T/C Contender up as a carbine, but naaaaa!

Curtis, I like the looks of your Krag!
To me, that type of rifle represents one of the best times ever in this country. WW2 is over, "obsolete" bolt actions;Krags, Mausers, Springfields, and Enfields can be bought mail order (direct to your house ) for very little money. Good aftermarket stuff to "sporterize" them with. When done right, like yours, they really tickle me pink.

GatCat, thanks for the compliments. I fell in love with that rifle when a friend and co-worker bought it 20 years ago but I didn't have any money at the time. Last year I bought it from him for what he paid for it (now he's a REALLY good friend, LOL). I took it apart and found that it was sporterized in 1966 by a C. Jones in Lansing MI. The gentleman did an outstanding job.

Blackpowderbill, I'm glad you posted this because it helped me see the obvious. Last fourth of July my friend and our boys went out shooting and our fun with the Krag was limited by how much it heated up with the jacketed bullet loads we were shooting (180 gr at about 90% of max). I didn't give it much thought until your post. I think it is time to develop some cast loads and bump up the "fun factor"!! Thanks, man!
