Sighting in bolt action rifle
« on: October 23, 2008, 03:24:15 AM »
I have a bolt action Savage 10 FP Im sighting in. In doing some research I found this...

Can someone please tell a name brand (so I can internet search) or something similar that I can use that is the same (or close to it) as the three legged adjustable rest in the picture under the forearm. This looks like something I can get dialed in with and is still pretty basic because I will not be doing any competition shooting.

There are a lot of rests at your local BassPro, Cabelas or Gander Mountain.  I kinda like Caldwell's Lead Sled.  They are a little pricey.

Sportsman's Warehouse usually has a bunch of different bags and rests......

The Hoppe's is still listed as available in the 2008 Midsouth Shooters Supply catalog. Midsouth also sells several other similar front rests and are GBO Sponsors not to mention generally they have the best prices around and charge only actual shipping costs with no extras added for handling and packaging like most do.

Thanks for all the help. You people are a bad influence ::) I wish you would stop twisting my arm.
Anyway I hope I made a good decision by ordering this shooting rest from MidSouth along with a couple of boxes of ammo...

I didnt want to go too expensive but thought I might be glad later down the road with it. Any one else use one similar ?

Not that exact model but something rather similar. Hated it with a passion. Bought one for me and the wife both. I'm sure they are still around here somewhere but where I have no clue. After giving them a try we went back to sand bags. I believe you will regret it if you buy that. Do as you please but that type set up to me at least is nothing short of HORRIBLE.

I highly recommend you back up and relook what you need. I've been doing this shooting from a bench stuff for perhaps 45-50 years now. I've used about every sorta gadget made for it and have come full circle and now am again back to just plain old sandbags. I have a Sinclair front rest (kinda sorta like the Hoppe's but on steroids) and do use it from time to time but actually prefer just plain old sandbags.

I made mine from used cloth shot bags but have some made from cut off jeans legs as well. I even have some fancy ones made from leather but I still prefer the ones made from shot bags and filled with sand.

The one you are now looking at appears to sit the butt of rifle into a holder which then in turn is what will contact your shoulder. Do you REALLY want that? I tend to think not and if your primary use of the rifle is other than shooting it from the bench with that set up then I say definitely no you don't.

+1 to the sandbags
I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."

+2, I've tried a couple of different rests/sight vise jobs, and didn't like them at all.  Plain old sand bags/shot bags/ whatever work the best.  I've made them out of old jeans, old socks, shirt sleeves, they all work great.  So do the commercially available bags.  For a light field rest for my rifle, I've also used perlite or vermiculite from the garden store in some old socks.  They worked pretty good too.

I vote for the sand bags too, but I fill mine with kitty litter (not quite as heavy).

Well another lesson learned the hard way. The stand is very nice and very well made (heavy duty). But the problem that I have now is that I would have to have something very sturdy to set it on or I would have to set it on the ground. I didnt even fire from it but I sat the rifle in it and I could tell it was not for me. Can someone tell me where I can get a couple of shot bags cheap ?  ???

If you have a local skeet or trap range go there and ask. Guys there always have plenty on hand at home. You can use cut off pant legs from jeans or anything that will hold some sand really.
