Optima Barrel length- 26" vs. 29"
« on: August 08, 2003, 09:18:03 AM »
I am a longtime wingshooter, but now live in an area where there really are no ducks.  I have hunted and killed deer with rifle, shotgun, handgun and bow, but have never hunted with the fabled firestick.  I have read all the great posts on which gun to buy and why, and I am generally convinced that the Encore would be the best choice for me.  However, I can't seem to convince the "boss" that I need to spend that much on a BP rifle when I could buy two of most other kinds.  Plus in her "expert" opinion, they look the same  .  Thus, it seems that I will be settling for an Optima.

The question is this:  What are the pros/cons of the longer barrel?  I'm guessing that longer=better accuracy and shorter=lighter and easier to maneuver in a stand.  Aside from that, are there some definite thoughts either way?  Looking for some input from the veterans.

I have shot both, and the 29"has fluting on the barrel. I think it  is more for looks than reducing weight. I would go with it though because the Optima Pro has metal sight bases and the regular optima has plastic. Also the pro has an aluminum ramrod as opposed to the plastic/composite (whatever you want to call it) ramrod on the regular optima. Either one would do you fine.... Not to P.O. any Encore fans, but both were shooting right up there with the encores in the group... I say this as an Encore fan!
Cheers,

Longrifle

If you feel BPI products would serve you properly, for a few bucks more (around $70)  the Winchester Apex 29" has more value for the money. It has better name recognition, an estimated 3 lb trigger, a real blued or stainless barrel and an attached sling. The Optima Pro's barrel is not baked-blued ... it's a blue finish. The telescopic ramrod with it has not been well liked by new buyers.

Another worthwhile rifle to consider in the $275 range is the new 26" offering of the Knight Wolverine. You get the Green Mountain barrel and Timney trigger with that one. Knight is a trusted name.

Thanks for the input, guys.  Sorry it has taken so long to respond, I've been away for a while.

I like the break action MLs since I shoot Over/under shotguns exclusively now.  It just feels more natural to me.  Also, a good buddy has an Encore which I have shot and love.  I'm just trying to make do with something as close to an Encore without the premium price, until later.

I've heard that both Nickel and stainless are much easier to clean than blued barrels, but my source is a doctor who would buy a ML made out of plutonium for $50,000 if someone told him it was better.  He's a good shooter, but doesn't have to live on a budget.  Are they really easier to clean and maintain?  Any comments for the newbie would be greatly appreciated!

Consider the H&R Huntsman as an American-made alternative.  Nice little guns by all accounts (except for the ramrods).  Most reports indicate they shoot right with the Encores!

And less expensive.

Forgot to answer your question, YES!!!  But the Optima offers no obvious way to clean in the area of the firing pin or the action internals.  Based upon my very limited exposure, I'm sure those rifles WILL need cleaning internally.  The owner's manual gives no instructions for that part of the rifle's maintenance.  Triggers are reportedly from decent to horrible.  The one I shot was tolerable but had a bit of grit and was a little heavy for my tastes.

But, barrel cleaning is MUCH easier with any breakopen compared to most action types.
WHUT?

Not nickel, that is external plating only (hopefully!).
