Remington 799
« on: October 23, 2008, 03:24:40 PM »
Your thoughts or comments on the short action Remington 799. I'm looking to get a bolt action in 223 and it will be a Remington, either a 700 tactical,700 sps, or the 799. Haven't handled the 799 yet but I like the 20 inch barrel of it and the tactical. Reviews I've seen on 799 while many like it they say bolt is ruff and you have to adjust trigger but they do shoot well and overall is a nice package.Any one have one fill us in on overall impressions.

I just got a flyer from our local Cabelas. They are on sale for 369.00 until the end of the mounth. That is a hard price to beat.

That is a good price.  I've been looking at them myself.

That's what I thought, good price and would make a dandy walk about rifle. And if action is kind of ruff, it would only get better with use. The 700 sps is $100 more and I just wondered as much as I like my 700s if I would regret buying the 799,if it didn't shoot well. Got sunday off which is last day on the flyer so may try to go handle one, see if I like it enough to buy one.

The 799 is the same as the Interarms Mini Mauser. The guys I know who have the Interarms versions, won't part with them because of how good they shoot.

Wasn't Remington planning on producing them in a left hand rifle ?  I know they produced a prototype in  375 H & H.

I saw something about a lefty version a while back. It may have been on Guns and Ammo TV, but I'm not absolutely sure. I've been trying to find one of the zRH versions to fondle but to no avail. None of my local gunshops have any of the 798s or 799s. I called Remington and asked why they're not selling any to the big stores such as Gander Mnt, Sportsmans or Dicks. She told me they were going thru some of the larger wholesalers only. She assured me all I had to do was to get one of my local small stores to order me one, but I'd like to handle one prior to putting up the cash.

I know the stocks are made in the USA, even though the guns aren't.  I think it's Boyd's too.

Does Rem still make the LVSF?  That's a sweet rifle to me.

I believe that Boyd's is the supplier of all Remington's Laminated stocks.

And at least their CDL stocks also!  When I went to bed my Whelen CDL, the stock was stamped "Boyds" right where the receiver ring sits.

Here's mine in .223 rem, you are going to want to invest in a better trigger, I saving up for a timney myself. the bluing is good; they put some epoxy in front of the barrel lug to free float the barrel, going to get mine done professionally.

I understand that Remington stopped their contract with Zastava, so that any 799's still available are it.

As indicated earlier, they were known previously as the Charles Daly imported Mini-mauser, and Interarms imported mini mauser.

No word on if anyone will restart importing the action.

I got a lefty action from the Daly daze.  I'll get a picture of my finished 222 up shortly.

My barrel is an aftermarket 12 twist, so I am still experimenting with some light bullets to group.
