Price Check on Ruger #1
« on: October 24, 2008, 09:09:14 AM »
Found a new .243 #1 at my local gunshop.  Price on the tag said 855.00.  Guy said he would take $700.00.
Good/Bad deal???

Thanks

Sam

700.00 sounds fair if the Rifle is in good shape and the bore is not shot out. A .243 is one I'd have  the throat inspected on before I bought it.

More than fair really, most of the new ones I've seen are starting in the $765-$780 range.  I would find out how long he's had the gun though....   If there's a chance that its a really old one (I mean not made in the last 15 years or so), I'd try to get him down lower.  There were some issues occasionally with the barrels Ruger was using before they started making their own.  I can't remember when Ruger started making their own barrels, but anything that's newer than 15 years should be ok.  As goofy as it sounds, depending on the popularity of the #1 in your area, it's entirely possible that the gun could be that old.  I see them on the auction sites all the time.

It looks like about a 2006 production or so.  It has the stainless block in it, and the guy behind the counter said Ruger started that a couple years ago...

Is it stainless and laminate?  Or just the falling part of the action is stainless?  I bought a #1A back in 98' that had a stainless block on it.  Regardless, I think that you're good to go.  Let us know how it shoots.

TO me, these just loose sooo much class in stainless. The classy design is simply meant for nice blued steel and walnut.

I think that the stainless/laminate is a good looking rifle too, but in the modern context.  If you want the classic beauty, the regular walnut/blue makes the #1 the best looking factory gun on the market today.  I even like them better than the Dakota Model 10 single shot, although you can get much nicer wood on the Dakota (besides the fact that they Dakota costs several thousand dollars more).

I bought mine NIB for 600 bucks. list was 800.00 that was 3 or 4 years ago. 700 is not bad for new. though I never cared for .243's though I have one. (hey M700 for 250 bucks. shoots dime size groups). my number 1 is  in .257 roberts.  the other thing though is 1b's are damn heavy when you add a scope.  maybe thats why it hasn't sold,a light caliber in a heavy rifle.,

They can be converted to just about any cartridge you ever wanted.  I would like one in .405 winchester some day

Too heavy?  They're listed as at most 8 1/4 pounds, only a pound less than the RSI.  If that dctates it as a stand rifle well... ::)  See this quite a bit.  ppl cmplain about 7 and 8 pound rifles and how heavy they are.  Is it that the guns truely are too heavy to carry or is it that American hunters, heck the general public, is getting lazy?
I've caried a #1V all day and didn't feel tired, worn out, fatigued or over burdoned at the end of the day. Such a monumental event since it weighs in at about 10 pounds.  :o   :D

DING, DING, DING!  We have a winner.  Try lugging around my Winchester M70 Classic in .300 Win Mag w/ BOSS.  It shoots one ragged hole all day long, but I would not hike many mountains with that thing.  It is a bean field rifle extraordinaire.

Last sunday at the ok. city gun show  there was a dealer selling new in the box from 600.00 to 750.00 depending on cal. He makes all the shows and that seems to be his going price.
