WIsconsin Grouse Stamp
« on: October 25, 2008, 01:50:45 AM »
I was reading an article not long ago in Wisconsin Sportsman about grouse hunting.  The article suggested the possibility of a "Grouse Stamp" to fund grouse conservation activities.  I don't particularly wish to pay more for a license and I feel that the WI DNR isn't maybe the most efficient or capable so that inclines me to say no.  However, I also see the potential to improve and sustain grouse populations if it were done right.  I thought I would see what you guys thought.  Cast your vote and weigh in if you like!

I voted a cautious yes. I fear the funds could be wasted or mishandled. At times I have my doubts about the DNR's abilities. If it were handled right, good things could happen and I am willing to risk ten dollars on that.

I also voted "yes," but like you guys already mentioned, the money could very well just get wasted or somehow mishandled. But, if it worked like it was intended, I'd be more than happy to donate to a good cause. Plus, like Cheesehead said, it's only ten dollars with the possibility that something good might happen. I'd say it's worth taking the risk.

I vote no. They will blow the money on a timber wolf study  contracted out to the Humane Society.

I voted no also. With funds as tight as they are, you know Wisconsin will not supplement the native population with planted birds...habitat is the key. On public lands habitat is already maintained by selective and clear cutting. Not only does this help the grouse, but it also benefits deer and woodcock. Improving habitat on private lands will only benefit the landowner. Unlike pheasants which prefer more open Ag land and Set asides where getting access is fairly easy, grouse prefer the woods and edges. Because deer prefer the same habitat as grouse, most land owners will hesitate to give permission to hunters or to lease this type of habitat to the DNR for the general public, because of their fear of it interfering with their deer hunting ....be it bow or gun. With deer seasons running from the beginning of grouse season to almost the end of grouse season, I believe getting access on these areas would be slim.
"where'd you get the gun....son?"

I see nothing, no possible benefit to grouse habitat or preservation at all.  They are a cyclic species, which was proven many decades ago.
