Which flag appropriate to represent "the cause"?
« on: October 26, 2008, 03:44:38 AM »
I thought that I'd make an appeal to all you historians in this forum concerning the most appropriate flag to fly to represent the southern spirit of freedom.  I was thinking that it should be related to the Confederacy.

The problem I'm running in to is that my wife's family is northern and one of her grandfather's greatest hero's was Lincoln.  I'm leaning toward rotating such a flag with the Revolutionary War flags of the broken serpent "Don't Tread on Me" and the "Live Free or Die" flag.  Each would be unfurled beneath the American Flag of course.

What particular flag would you fellas recommend as most appropriate?

Why not the Bonnie Blue?

Hey GB,  I like that.  Very subtle.

That would be a nice conversation starter without being blatantly offensive to those who don't understand.

Any other suggestions?

The Texas Lone Star flag is based on the Bonnie Blue. Also most states adopted their own flag after the seceeded from the Union and before they Joined the Confederacy. The louisiana state flag for instance was alternating blue and i believe orangy yellow with a single star in the upper left corner. Those are conversation starters also.

Thanks,

I did a search on Wikipedia and found the First National flag of the Confederacy.  Very nice.  I like the battle flag but my wife thinks that it's too "in your face".  She more right than wrong.

Looks like there are more good choices than I had thought.

While it is considered to be somewhat "in your face", I feel that the "Stars and Bars" are the most classic representation of the Southern cause, and the only hatred it represents is the hatred for Northern interference and dominance.  Just my opinion!

gwindrider,

I agree with you, but.....  As I got to thinking about it, I realized that the demonization that the stars and bars has absorbed would make a gentle launch into conversations a bit more difficult.  I'd love to fly that one.

However, I'm leaning toward using this to start discussions that will make people think in the affirmative concerning the Confederate states.  I want to plant seeds that will help people understand that the tyranny which began to erode their freedoms started with Mr. Lincoln's War.

Considering this nations apparent soon jump toward rank socialism the fields should be ripe for picking.

I believe our second national flag would be most fitting in that its the one that was used the longest or the Bonnie Blue, which I would guess, that most have no idea where that flag came from or what it stands for. If you use the Bonnie Blue I would hope that you are fully aware of the complete history of this flag. Good luck and post a picture if you can. I'm very interested in just how you make out, please keep us posted. ;)

I came back to add several links that you may want to look at and read.

While there are alot of flags to pick from if you use one that has St. Andrews Cross in it, that alone, might open up a talk by you about the true reasoning for the Battle flag and it true meaning. Brfore the late 1940's - early 1950's our Battle flag was not one of hatred as it is now looked apon. Again I say good luck to you.

gwindrider1, with all due respect, the "Stars and Bars" and our "Battle flag" are not one and the same.

While I applaud much here, I, as usual, must point out some facts which are overlooked or misconstrued.
Every state had a state flag.
You can't have a national flag if you, in fact, are a confederation under treaty.
It is an oxmoron to say that the South was a nation---by your own words.

Well dang WL please explain just how the US (under a Confederation for 6 years before signing the Constitution in July of 1787) had a National flag, the same as today save for more stars, adopted on June 14th 1777. Must be a whole lot of oxymoron's going on, Hmmmmm. ::)

littlecanoe if I may you just might want to use either the Alabama or Florida State flag as both have the Southern Cross on a white background and I don't see how either could be deemed offensive as they are legal state flags. Assuming you to be from another state I'm sure that many would ask why you would be flying the flag of another state. That would be your opening to do your thing?!

As I said before good luck.

It was not a Union until the Constitution and all parties (states) agreed then it became a Union--it was not a national flag until then and several flags were up for adoption as a national flag.
Nations under treaty are not A nation but a confederacy.
