One or two more rifle barrels.

I have a G2 with these rifle barrels; 22 Match, 204 Ruger, and 7-30 Waters.  I'm thinking of a 358 JDJ as the BIG caliber.  I like it over the 375 JDJ because it has a wider variety of bullets.  The other barrel I'm thinking of is the 17 Fireball.  Is it too close to the 204?

 ???  I don't get a wider variety of bullets unless your main uses are mostly for bullets on the lighter end.   There are a bunch of bullet choices for the 375, although the 270 gr. is probably the workhorse.   JD recommends 180-250 gr pills for the 358 (although up to 310 gr are available)... and 220-300 gr pills for the 375 (up to 350 gr available).   The 375 will easily do anything the 358 will, plus a bunch more.   

I've shot 375JDJ's since a couple of years after JD came out with it, the 309 and smaller JDJ's about 2/3's as long.   Used the 309 for mule deer and the 375's for everything bigger, so never saw a need for the 358.   To each his own I guess.

I was thinking more along the lines of pistol bullets for plinking and the heavier spitzers for big game.  I don't hunt in Africa right now or the big bears in Alaska.  I thought it would be a dandy for whitetails in close cover with 180 XTP's, and hogs, blackbear, elk, or moose, with 225+ grain pointy bullets.

Handgun bullerts out of a .358 JDJ on deer?  Not a good idea at all.  The 180XTP bullet is designed for revolver cartridge velocity with a max of 2000 fps - in a top .358JDJ load it will likely cause over-expansion, particularly up close.  Better to use the 180 Speer or one of the 200-grain RN bullets for close deer, they are designed for your velocity window.  They will give excellent expansion and penetration - the XTP likely will not penetrate well.

Actually, I used 158 gr. Hornady XTP bullets out of a 357 Herrett to take a black wildebeest and there was no problem with lack of penetration or over expansion.  I would agree there are better .357/.358 caliber hunting bullets available.  I hadn't planned on using them on the wildebeest but they worked fine.

The 358 JDJ would work just fine on deer with a variety of bullets and so would the 375 JDJ.  I happen to have a 375 JDJ.
