A question on an old muzzleoader
« on: October 26, 2008, 03:19:02 PM »
Hopefully Im posting to the right board. I have a friend that just inherited an old muzzleoader from his deceased grandfather who was an avid gun collecter. This muzzloader is a Francotte 69 caliber with a few markings on it.  It does have some info with it that it says its a "Piedmont" or Piedmontese. On the web it says that some of these guns were issued to the 74th Pennsylvania in the civil war. Can anyone help me out with some of the other markings on this gun. I should have pics by tuesday or wednesday. Thanks!

If you don't get an answer here, the folks over on the Traditional Muzzleloading Forum are a good source for identification of markings and such.

well first  off i would try eather the TMA "TRADITIONAL MUZZLELOADING ASSOCIATION "
or THE AMERICIAN LONG RIFLE ASSOCIATION .
both organizations have  well known  colectors and smiths from both sides of the pond that will most like give you  information you can take to the bank .

tell then , post your photos . we should be able to ID most of them for you .
you shoold find a caliber mark , a proffing mark and a proventual mark . you may even find an importer mark and a makers mark if your real lucky

Sounds like a Francotte Peidmontese Mod. 1844/60.
