Scope base for Texas Contender barrel
« on: October 27, 2008, 12:53:40 PM »
I just purchased a beautiful Texas Contender barrel in 30 Herrett.  It is a 22" bull barrel.  I have a problem in that the scope base for the Contender barrel does not fit.

I have a Weaver base number 92A.  The hole pairing matches but the spacing between the sets of holes is different.  I can get one hole in one pair to align and a hole in the other pair to align but this only gives me two screws to hold the base in place.  Is there a Weaver two piece base that can be used on this barrel contour?  The location of the mounting holes also has the base about 1.75 inches forward of the normal location on Contender barrels.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Duckhunter.

Since they are long gone, or so I've heard, I doubt you'll find a base that will just screw right on as they probably used their own screw pattern and base.    More than likely your best option is to just have a gunsmith or machinist drill and tap new holes where you want them for a standard TC base, and use filler screws in any old holes that show.

Location of the rear sight/scope base on standard TC Contender barrels depends on if its a pistol or carbine length barrel.   Pistols are back over the chamber, the carbine barrels forward (and maybe the Super 16's as well).   I like them back, so even on my custom carbine barrels the base is over the chamber.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Ladobe, Thanks for the reply.  I finally drilled another hole in the Weaver base to align with one of the other hole.  Now I have three screws holding the base.  This is a 30 Herrett barrel so I am going to use it with the three screws as recoil shouldn't be a problem with this cartridge.

That is where I got my 30 Herrett barrel.  It is a great looking barrel but I had to modify a scope base because the mounting holes were not the standard hole spacing for the Contender.  I ended up with three screws holding the base instead of the normal four.  The Herrett isn't big enough to have serious recoil so this should work fine.

Why not cut a weaver base in half and make your own 2 piece mount? As long as all the holes will line up once you cut it you are good to go.

That is an excellent idea.  If the three screw base gives me problems that will be my next step.  Thanks for the suggestion.
