What ever happened to the 5 1/2" Redhawk?
« on: October 28, 2008, 01:46:51 AM »
I've always had my eye out for one of these.  I'm not sure why but the 4" redhawk seems too short, and the 7 1/2" redhawk seems too long.  Did Ruger quit making the 5 1/2" redhawk?  They are hard to find even online.

I just started looking for one and yea know I was kinda thinking this may be more difficult to find one than I thought.  My guesses are the Ruger Alaskan is being produced and promoted thus less Redhawks. Also seems to be a lot of 71/2 inch barreled Redhawks out there.  People sold/traded them in for 454, 460 480, & 500 revolvers.  People are holden on to the 5/12 inch Redhawks cause they useful for different kinds of shooting needs.

I have seen the 7 1/2" barreled guns all over the auction websites and there are plenty of good deals on them, IF that's what you're looking for.  I used to have a super blackhawk with a 7" barrel and that's just too big and clumbsy for me.  I have seen brand new 5 1/2" redhawks but they are selling for over 600.  I just wish there was a middle ground.

I think one possible reason for limited availability is that, I believe, they are made in batches. Most of the year they may be making something else, and make the years worth of 5 1/2" guns in some limited period of time.

My .44 mag and .45 Colt Redhawks are both 5 1/2". I feel it is the best length.

had a srh 5.5 and loved it.  why dont i have it anymore?  traded it with a freind that liked d.a. for 5.5 sbh.  in 10 years of owning a dan wesson i bet i didnt use d.a. a dozen times.  5 1/2 INCH RED HAWK IS THE BEST!  just love the single action
Everything before BUT is B.S.

I also like the 5.5 inch Redhawk. I had one in 44 Magnum. Someone took it from my sons truck. I did replace it with a 7.5 inch Super Redhawk in 454. I had that one cut back to 5.5 inches. It is a good packing length.

I found one in a local gun shop that is 5.5 inch and in my favorite caliber, 45 colt.  He had just got it in and did the paper work on it.  Still had it in his hand to put it in the case when I walked in, timing is everything. ;)  Had been trying to find one in 45 for 2-3 years, and this one was even stainless like I wanted.  DP

After reading all this I'm glad I got mine when I did. Had it for a little over 2 years and have been tickled with it ever since. The 5 1/2" is much easier to carry than the other lengths. Shoulder harness is my choice of carry. Stainless is the way to go. Looks even better with the Tulip wood grips from Hogue.

I've given a lot of thought to the 4" redhawk lately, but I still think the 5 1/2" barrel would be the way to go.  I've been dreaming that hogue will announce a redhawk tamer grip at this years SHOT show, but that's just a far fetch.

Ted, I've got one with the smoothest action I've ever felt on a Ruger. And I'm keeping it.

It's rare to find them on a shelf, and finding them online will cost an arm and a leg.  I might get more serious about buying one after I see what is, or isn't coming out in this years shot show.  Ruger is supposed to have a couple surprises.

Morn'in,

Don't know any of the answers to the above questions, but KEEP LOOK'IN as it is worth the effort.

The RH in 5.5" is a great one.

Mine likes the 310 cast LBT ahead of 19grs of AA #9 for about 1300fps.

ONE TOUGH GUN!!!!!

Keep em coming!

I keep my eyes open for one, but new or used they seem to be pushing $600 and I'm having a hard time convincing myself I need one for that amount.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed though.

The only thing harder than finding a 5.5" redhawk is a rubber grip for it that feels good. Seems like the grip companies have plenty to offer for the Super and GP's but not the Redhawk. I'll probably switch back to the factory rosewood grips or look at other wood.

You got that right.  A 5 1/2" redhawk is very hard to find, especially for under $600.  Hogue makes two rubber grips for the redhawk the bantam and the regular wrap around.  If hogue made the tamer grip for the redhawk it'd be a no brainer.

I've got Pachmayrs(full wrap around with finger grooves) on my Redhawk. They work good for me?

Getting over $500 for a selling price wouldn't be a problem for you if it's in good shape.

The problem I have is when I see a decent used one it's 500-550, then shipping, then ffl and before you know it, you're over 600.

Some day....

I've seen the blued redhawks selling very well too.  On rugers website they have that model marked as discontinued so you might be able to do even better.  I'm looking for a stainless one and trying to keep the total cost low.  I may end up just buying a super blackhawk some day if I can't find a good deal on a redhawk.  Ideally I'd like to find one before next hunting season, but there's a lot that can happen in this economy between now and next Nov.

I agree auction site dealers are getting way too much for shipping with some charging a handling fee? Next thing we'll be having to pay with paypal like ebay? I recently turned down some reloading stuff on fleebay from Indiana to Illinois because he wanted $35 shipping? I can do without deals like this.

Some shipping charges I can understand, but there are other that are just outragious.  I don't anything can get shipped anywhere right now for less than $10, let alone a gun that weighs something.  I'm not in any rush.
