good deal on reloading equipment?
« on: October 29, 2008, 01:30:06 AM »
I have been thinking about getting into reloading for 243 and 270 handirifles and have been looking for used equipment for awhile. Here is a deal I can get locally for $200 asking price and want to know your opinions is it a good deal or not?

a lyman twin turbo tumbler , universal case trimmer with nine pilots , micrometer , caliper , easy case length gauge cartrige case gauge , Lee single stage press , perfect powder measuer , scale ,  primer installer , 30-06 dies 30/30 dies , RCBS case lube pad and loading block , also two boxes of nosler balitic tip bullets 30 cal 180 grain , lyman reloading manual and hodgdon data manual also have some 30-06 and 30/30 brass

My estimate using a 2007 Cabelas reloading catalogue is this is worth about $360  if new, does that sound right? Its basically a Lee anniversary kit plus extras I think.

thanks for the help.
Joe

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

i think that is a pretty good deal if everything is in good condition. Believe it or not the most valuable thing that you listed is the load data, you can NEVER to much data. I all find myself looking up loads from on source and cross ref. with data from another source to find the best load for any given cal. That lee is  great for a person just starting reloading, once you get the hang of it you may want to up grade to better press. Personally i currently  have a lee 4 hole turret press, you can reload a complete shell in a few seconds and if your reloading multiple calibers you dies quick.

To me that's a no go deal.

You have no need for the bullets since you say it's .243 and .270 you plan to load for. They are .308 so you'll need to find a buyer for them then ship them. Same for the brass it's not what you need so is no help.

I'd just buy a good set of some major brand like Hornady, RCBS, Redding or Lyman if it were me. I like the Lee Auto Prime but use no other Lee tools for reloading. I realize many like them I'm just not one of them.

Things are a bargain ONLY if you need them. Much of that you don't the things you do you can get for less new or buy better tools for similar prices. Personally I'd pass on it.

It's a good deal for someone reloading a 30 caliber...

For you... Not really.

You guys have this backwards.  This is a good excuse to buy some .308 caliber rifles.

You can always sell the dies you don't want on ebay for more than they cost new at Mid-South Shooter's Supply.

Not good for $200!

Start out with items you actually need and can use, you can find great deals off the internet auctions sites for used items.

Even used items are backed by 100% warranties from the major reloading companies, like RCBS.

Buy a cast iron "O" press design like the RCBS rock chucker.

You can do a better job getting just the essentials separately.  The Lee powder
scale is not a great unit.  Get a press, some dies, a good scale and the supplies
YOU need to reload.  Search every possible avenue for the best deal. Ask friends,
they may have extra stuff to borrow or buy cheap...

Go to the library and see if they have manuals (mine does) or go online to
Hodgdon.com for both Hodgdon & IMR powders.  Again, ask a friend
to borrow a book or two.

Wait for the best deals and buy then.  I've got alot of stuff and don't have
anywhere near that much into it.

Good luck!!
Mike

Joe,

Here's a good read on what you need to start reloading, click Tools of the Trade on the left.  ;)

thanks for the feedback that is what is so great about this forum!

I thought about offering $150 but still realized that there were items I would not need (dies for 3030 and 3006) and would have to sell on here or Ebay and still get the things I needed like dies for 243 and 270...

If I could go back and buy all my reloading equipment again, I'd buy it all used off of ebay.  I had a rock chucker kit until I upgraded to the Dillon 550B.  You can find all kinds of great deals on reloading equipment on ebay and most of the equipment is hardly used.  It's kinda like people that buy a treadmill and think they'll use it, but never do.  I'd check ebay, or at least use it to compare your prices.

No this is not a good deal for you. Check Mid South the reloading kit can be had for less than 100. Find someone that reloads and go to his place for some fun time and learn from them. Lee has a good book that they sometimes inclued in the kit. Gun shows are a good place to look for used dies.  Clark
