Holy Howitzers
« on: October 29, 2008, 02:37:44 AM »
I ran across this picture while looking for others. This is inside the chapel at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. There are six original mountain howitzers barrels set into the walls, three on each side.

Reminds me of Hotel San Fantin in Venice where there is a monument to the 1848 revolution, with gunnades and shot built into it. You can see some of them here:

Tx for posting pix of the hotel.  It looks like they set those gunades into the wall with the bottom side out.

They preach fire and brimstone in that church, so the howitzers fit right in.

I'll come in and offer to saw three in half and re-install them, in exchange for the other three. Good idea? MIKE :)

Max,

That's a great photo; to quote the late Johnny Carson, "I did not know that". I've never seen or heard of the chapel nor its unique wall decorations before. I wonder if these six shiny pieces have been recorded in the National Register of Surviving Civil War Artillery?
I've now got the notion to recommend this to our Parish authorities, I haven't had a priest close to cursing me out since I was a youth. Though instead of the wall mountings I think they'd make excellent holy water fonts, I'll suggest two standing on bases beside the main doors with specially made bowls that fit in the muzzles.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

What kind of sacrilage is this (sacrilage to good cannons) - Here's another example - some big cannon set into the ground as pivots for a coastal battery, not far from where I live.
Where can I get a big crane ?

Boom J, They are listed on the National Register. Note that they are mounted muzzle up. Must be a passage that says "lift thy muzzles to the heavens".   :)

Better yet rather than destroy 3 have 6 new ones cast as replacements and all six are saved.

You know most sinners go to churched to be saved....... I never thought I'd be wanting to get something away
from a church to be saved.......  ::)
