I friend of mine brought his new Savage today(270). I took four shots to get sighted and let the barrel cool down...I let him shoot the rest of the box...

WarEagle, I think that was mighty nice of you to let him shoot his new rifle...;D ;D

Yes,
being the guy that everyone brings their gun to tune has advantages.   I get to do alot of shooting for free.  Now, if I can just figure out how to make some money doing this...

Try a 300 win mag , the 1000 yard boys seem to be heading that way , the new world record was set with a 300 hulk . a 338 lupua necked down to 30 cal pushing 240 gr. bullet to almost 3000 fps .
The record - 1.403 5 shot group .
try the Savage and i own a Ruger . Some seem to think the 308 starts to give up accy after 800 yards , I don't know . BUT most bean field rifles i have seen are larger case rounds than a 308 also .
good luck !

As far as the aluminum cleaning rod comment.  Aluminum is much softer than the steel used in barrel manufacturing.  The myth about aluminum rods is just that a myth.  Crown damage will be more likely with an attachment that screws into the rod. There are also steel rods out there as well.

alum. being soft has the danger of hard particles getting imbeded in the rod - causing damage also , just check it often.

I always heard it was the ill fitting joints and particles that ruin the crown by cleaning from the muzzle end. No idea I use coated steel and bore snakes.
