I use to run 3 to 5 coyote lines, between 60 to 90 traps per line. Most of my sets were at least 3 miles a part,2 to 3 trap sets per location, approximently a 3 day check.I would prepare 30 dozen coyote traps for each season when I trapped coyotes hard.I would have about 1500 snares ready for snare lines.I double staked everything in those days, that was 60 dozen 22" rebar stakes with stake connectors.I then had snare supports for the snares.I'd have at least 2 gallons of prepared bait and the equivalent of 4 pints of lure,a gallon of coyote urine.I'd lay my lines out in loops so as to double back or back track as little as possible.I would check traps from the front seat of the pickup truck as much as possible. When my catch numbers would drop off on a line I'd pick up the traps and reset them in new territory I had prescouted and had permission lined up for.I'd started Oct.1st and tried to trap through November, then pull traps and go to snares.By Christmas our coyotes were rubbed to bad to take.If I had bobcat country set up I'd go set cat lines.Never had a 4 wheeler, always trapped from a 1/2 ton 4 wheel drive pickup. The way to make big coyote catches is to keep setting traps on new litters of coyotes. When I first started coyote trapping I would set up lines and tend them for 2 months. After the local coyotes got trapped or shot off I'd have poor results until a few coyotes would drift into the the vacancy left by the local coyotes. When I learned to move into areas of new coyotes, ones that hadn't been trapped my catches would stay up,numbers wise. The secret of big coyote catches is lots of hard work.As long as you make clean, well made sets on good locations, with coyotes in the area you have good catches.Weather here plays a big part.I can't keep traps working good in our snow so I go to snares.I can't physically do this anymore so I run some lines at home and pull them when the catch drops off or the weather gets too bad.My favorite coyote traps were Bridger #2's,for cats and coyotes Bridger #3's.I loved Sterlings MJ 600's but they are too costly to use in public traffic areas.Hope this helps.
