Accuracy with cheap factory .223 ammo?
« on: October 31, 2008, 05:14:06 AM »
This is all I'd be shooting. I can't afford to stock up on expensive ammo, and I won't shoot ammo I can't stock up on. The most I'd spend on ammo would be stuff that goes for about $.40/round ($20 for a box of 50, etc). What kind of groups could I expect in a Survivor with mild "accurizing" done (floated foreend, polished chamber / bore, etc)? Is 2" too hopeful?

Thanks.

I do not own a 223, cause i have a 204
but i would think 2" at a hundred would be possible w/CHEAP AMMO
Remember don't expect v-12 performance with 4 cly.
I wouldn't expect a race horse to win if all i feed him was straw.

With cheap Wolf ammo, I was getting 1" groups just after the break in period with my Handi.  With Winchester ammo my groups shrunk a little.  I did not do anything to "accurize" my handi. BTW, I have the 223 fluted bull barrel variety.
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to serve as a horrible warning.

I have been shooting the cheap wolf ammo also and maintain 1" groups at 100yds. I shoot the 55grn PSP not the FMJ. I tried the fmj's but didn't like them. I am still going to try some heavier grained ammo sometime. :)

I always shot BH 68gr match out of my AR and it produced .5" groups.  Ran about $30.00 per box of 50...
Probably the best .223 rounds i've ever shot...

My .223 Handi will keep all shots on a full size silhouette pig at 485 yards.  Once the scope was adjusted to the target, we never missed.  This was shooting American Eagle .223 from Federal.  I think I paid about $4.50 for a box of 20 when I bought it.  On the original sight in target at 50 yards, the last 5 shots were about size of a dime.

Good luck.  Hope you find some shooters.

Both the Ultramax and the Blackhills shoot under 2" pretty cheap. Kurt

Yeah J ,

The guys got you pointed in the right direction .. Midway USA lists the Black Hills (50 rounds) 55 psp (pointed soft point) and full metal jacket rounds at $24 FMJ and $25.50 for the PSP's.. The 60 gr PSP BH rounds go for $27 which should also do good in that 1 in 9 twist barrel the Survivor handi has..My bull barrel 223 even liked the 75 grainers from BH , and it really loved those hornady TAP 75 gr rounds

There is alot of ammo options out there , BH is probably the best priced quality ammo out there for the amount of rounds you get for your dollar

One thing to think about when shooting the .223 is the ogive (profile) of the bullet.  Commercial sporting rifles usually have a different leade at the throat of the rifling than military arms.  The FMJ bullets designed for use in military arms are designed to properly engage the longer leade in military rifles barrels.  The FMJ bullets I refer to here are those usually sold in bulk and made by RP or WW There are commercial FMJ bullets, such as those made by Sierra for instance, that will work fine in commercial sporting arms because the profile is designed for them.  Soft point or HP bullets, no problem, because this bullet type is not normally made for the military 5.56mm.  This same comment applies to .222 Rem. as well.

To carry this to the specific question of the OPer, some of the inexpensive generic .223 ammo may be loaded with FMJ military profile bullets, and this may affect your accuracy.
