Originally contemplated a Zeiss Conquest but decided it's too expensive.

Down to 2....

Leupold 3-9 40 VX-1 Gloss  $219.00

Bushnell 4200 3-9X40  Matte $275.00

The eye relief actually seems about the same.

Not really interested in other brands

Swampman,

If you have the extra bucks, I'd go with that Bushnell 4200 any day over a VX-I. The 4200 in my opinion is in the same league with a VX-III. And that's a great price on the 4200.

The Bushnell 3200 3-9X40 comes in a gloss finish that would look good on this gun.  I can get one of them shipped for quite a bit less than $200.00. Do you think it has enough eye relief?

I found an even better price on the 4200 as well????

The Bushnell 3200 is the direct competitor of the vx-1.  I have both.  I am kicking myself for not buying a second Bushnell.  I am not knocking the Leupold but the Bushnell is clearer and brighter.  Eye relief is not a problem with the Bushnell.   If you can find a 4200 for less than $275,  buy it!

Determining what is a "direct competitor" is a bit difficult but a more appropriate comparison is really the VX-II to the Elite 3200. The VX-I is more correctly a comparison to the Bushnell Trophy. The Bushnell Legend is really the Elite 3200 minus the Rainguard coating so it's not really quite correct to compare it to the VX-I either.

Still all of them are good scopes and all will do the job just fine.

I'm not sure about the claim that the Legend and the Elite 3200 are the same scope at all, minus the Rainguard.   ???

The Legend is made in the Phillipines, while the Elite is made in Japan. 

Bushnell claims fully-multi-coated lenses with 91% light transmission for the Legend, for the Elite they claim 87%-90% (depending on where you read it) and there's no claim of being fully-multi-coated.

Eye relief for the Legend is 3.5", the Elite 3200 is 3.3".

The Legend is longer and heavier than the Elite and the FOV's are different for both of them as well.

The Legend is not a one piece tube, while the Elite is one piece construction.

Other than the fact that they both say "Bushnell" on them, they are nothing alike at all.

Back to the question, Swampman, as much as you like the Elite 3200, I'm surprised you don't just put on it.  I like the Zeiss's too, but I just can't make myself pay for one, as much as I'd like to.  I think that the Elite 4200 for $275 would be the best choice, unless you've got to have a gloss finish for it. Are you going to put this scope on that .270 Mauser (wasn't it?) you picked up?

Yes, it has a very nice high gloss blued finish.  I'm sure the matte scope would look fine.

I found the 4200 for $259.95 shipped.

Ok, still doesn't make any sense.  Did someone who works for Bushnell tell you that?  I mean, if there were ANY similarity between the scopes, I could see their point, but there isn't anything alike on them at all.  Oh well, they are both good scopes, regardless.

On a classic looking gun like that, I think that I'd get a gloss fixed 6x for it.  A new Weaver K6 would be great on it, or maybe a Leupold 6x36 in gloss.  But man, $260 for the 4200 is unbeatable, really.

Buy, a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40mm and never be disappointed.

Also, concider used scopes off the auction sites or here, I pick up used Leupold scopes for dirt cheap and if there is anything wrong, Leupold Customer Service replaces them or repairs them fast and all you pay in shipping to them.  Guaranteed for life means the scope, regardless how many owners it has.

Leupold is all I buy any more, used Vari-X II's and higher or VX-II's and higher.

I don't waste my time or money on the Leupold Riflemans or VX-I, they don't have the audible click adjustments.

One thing I'm checking into is getting the fine crosshair reticle replaced with a duplex reticle in the 6X-40 Mauser scope that's currently on it.

I got a vx1 and it is not near as good as the nikon prostaff. So i'm saying bad on the vx1

You could also send that Mauser scope to the T.K. Lee Company and get it replaced with a center dot reticle, if you are wanting a better defined aiming point.  I've never shot one, but people who have tell me that you can't beat a dot reticle in a scope for fast precise shooting.  You can get it done for about $75 or so at Lee.  I don't see the Mauser scopes listed, but you could call them and ask about it.

I'm a Leupold fan myself, but given the choice between the two, I'd take the Elite 4200 over the vx-1 any day.

My wife said I could get one for Christmas.  I found the 3200 Elite 3-9X40 in gloss finish for $170.99 with free shipping.  Anyone know of a place with a better price?
