Need info on SB4 10 gauges--
« on: November 01, 2008, 08:09:36 PM »
Are they the same size as the SB2 or are they little bigger.
Are they heat treated alloy for extra strength?
Are they from the same later period of mfg as the NEF SB2 10 ga
and the SB2 12ga Ultra I have for our wildcat testing.Ed

Ed,

Are you sure you have a SB4 frame, haven't heard of that one yet? Unless they have finally come to their senses and re-named the SB2 shotgun frames (10ga and 12ga Ultra Slug) to distinguish them from the SB2 Cener Fire Rifle frames. But if they did, what happened to the SB3? The SB2 shotgun frames are cut thinner on the I.D. side walls to allow the larger O.D. diameter 10ga and 12ga Ultra Slug barrels to fully fit down in the receivers.

Hopefully someone has an answer for you, but I haven't heard of a SB4 frame before this.

Me neither, but google revealed a 2006 thread on another forum referring to an SB4 10ga, so it's not new, apparently older, the 10ga models on H&R's site are all SB2.

Ed,

Unfortunately anyone that used to know about an SB4 frame was at the Gardner MA plant which is now history, when they closed most of the knowledge about past production was lost. There have been numerous inquiries made to the new Remington H&R customer service about H&R firearms that have been unanswered or they have been given misinfo, so I wouldn't hold out for much info on that older frame. I just did a search here and found one thread on an SB4 frame with a serial number prefix of NE which would have been made in 1990, which to me suggests it wasn't as strong a frame as the current SB2 shotgun frame, H&R won't fit any high pressure rifle barrels to any SB2 frame made prior to 1999 (2000 as of 2009), if it's relevent anyway. My guess is that H&R changed the model designation of the 10ga frame when they upgraded it's strength, but that's just a WAG!! ;D
