howa .243 with hogue stock
« on: November 02, 2008, 01:25:53 PM »
just bought mine the other night and mounted the nikko scope that came with it. i shot it at the range tonight even though i was running out of shooting light by the time i got there.

i got it pretty close with my boresighter, and shot at 50 yards, putting 4 shots within about 3/4 of an inch. i would say this is great, considering i have not adjusted the trigger yet and i was rushing to get some shooting in.

as i cleaned the bore tonight i noticed a total lack of copper buildup, which is nice because i was shooting hollowpoints at 3700+ fps and it could easily create a nice mess, as it has in other rifle i have owned.

i will work up a load with this gun asap and let you guys know what i think. so far i love it and the stock is great!

went to the range again tonight to fine-tune and found the load i am going with. a 60-grain sierra hollowpoint, 41 grains of varget, remington primer and brass.

shot a group that literally tore only one hole, and that not much bigger diameter than the .243" bullet. i couldn't be happier with that!

i had to adjust how i was holding the rifle, as i had a habit of holding onto the forearm.

no, ran into money troubles and had to sell it.

now that i have a few bucks again i picked up a savage to replace it...

the howa made tiny little groups at 50 yards while looking for the right load, but never got to shoot it at 100, so i dont know how it would have done.

Also have a question. Do the Howas come with the Hogue stock that has the full bedding block or just the pillars? By the way it was shooting, it doesn't look like it really matters, but my curiosity is getting the better of me.

the one that comes on the rifle is the pillar bedded one.

but like you said, doesn't seem to matter.

the stock is like $175 if you buy it separately. with the rifle it's $500 with a nice Nikko scope.
