Pardner vs Tracker barrel profile ? re: rear sight ?
« on: November 03, 2008, 08:54:19 AM »
I saw a Tracker for sale at GunBroker and from the picture the barrel
contour looked just like my PArdner on the outside.  I realize it
has a rifled barrel.   My reason for asking is that the Tracker had
a rear sight about 6 or 8 inches from the breech end well forward
of the thick part.   Well my pardner has the same profile in it's
barrel and if the rear sight is so far forward and in front of the
thick part, it obviously is in a lower pressure part of the barrel
and I would like to use the same rear sight like I saw.  It
looked like true glow sights so I dont know if the rear sight
came from NEF factory or not.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the factory Tracker sites are soldered or glued on...not screwed on.  They do come apart.  There is a screw and spring for the windage adj. and a pin holds the elevator in place.  It is adj. by a screw and has a spring under it.

Why would that burst my bubble?  Thats great news as
it seemingly presents the possibility of applying the Tracker II
rear sight to the Pardner barrel.  Any reason why not ?

I can get a longer stud for the front sight.  I dont think that
would be any trouble.  While I dont much like the rear signt
being mounted so far forward, it is a huge improvement over
no reat sight at  all !

An alternative I am considering is gluing a small peep sight
insert that I have to the receiver in front of the hammer and
behind the barrel.  The problem is that it will not be adjustable
and I might have to do it a few times to get it lined up good.

That would give a long sight plane for accuracy good enough
for a smooth bore slug gun.  If I had unlimited money, I'd
like to get a fold up tang sight like on the western lever action
and Sharps type rifles.    I always wondered if having a tang
sight so far back would be dangerous to poking your eye out.
Guess you better damn well be wearing glasses when you shoot
something that kicks that much.

I had the same idea as you for the rear sight.  Then I checked with H&R customer service and was told I could not get the factory rear base from them.  My idea was to get that base and configure it with a "One Ragged Hole" sight blade.  I still may get the ORG sight kit, but just leave the base where it is.
Here is the link for  One Ragged Hole.  http://oneraggedhole.com/index.htm

Do your shoulder a favor and put a Limbsaver on that 12ga.  You will be glad you did.  I have one on my Tracker I 12ga and the felt recoil is noticably less than the felt recoil on my Tracker I 20ga that only has a factory recoil pad on it.  I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least.

I have even thought of filing a small "V" notch in the receiver, centered on top of the breech, to use as a sighting point and then adjusting the height of the front bead.  A guy can come up with all sorts of ideas, problem is testing them all out.LOL

Cookieman,  If you can drill a tiny shallow hole maybe 1/8 inch
centered between hammer and barrel then tap it, we can find
a slotted screw with a big head that we can adjust up and down
by turning half turns and filing the notch deeper in the screw slot.

But if we have that single tapped hole I am betting we can
find a rear sight to screw on either a V or a peep sight.

I already bought a peep hole insert I might glue there.

Wonder why they wont sell Tracker rear sights to glue on
Pardner barrels?   Probably cuz they want us to buy a rifled barrel
from them.
