Semi-Auto Shotgun Shell Catcher
« on: November 03, 2008, 09:44:24 AM »
I was shooting some trap over the weekend and saw something I'd like to have.  There was a guy there that obviously shoots trap / skeet very regularly.  He had a very nice autoloader that had something on the side of the gun which caused the ejected case to hold on the edge of the ejector until he took it off with his hand between each shot.  This kept him from chasing shells all over the place after his gun ejected them.  Anyone know what this thing is called so I can look for one?  I was searching shell catcher but came up with several hits that did not look like what this guy had.  Thanks for any info.

I found this one in my search yesterday as well.  I'm not sure about putting double sided tape on my shotgun though.  Seems like it would leave residue behind after a while.   I like the kind that are gun specific and clip on the side.  I haven't been able to find one for a Winchester SX3 though.  Thanks for the link...

Here is another one that snaps on.  I have seen this one....or one very much like it in use a number of times.

The other reason for using a shell catcher is to prevent your shells from hitting the shooter next to you, or from hitting his very expensive Krieghoff or Perazzi.  Many trap ranges won't let you shoot a semi-auto unless you have a shell catcher

I assume this only works for trap, and not skeet or other games that require shooting doubles. Is that true?

I find the T&S shell catcher works ok, but it's only available for certain models and only good for singles, (I have one for the 1100). Recently I purchased an SX3 and it certainly kicks the empties out a good distance. So I picked up a Save-It from Birchwood Casey for it. Works fantasticly! Fully adjustable for singles or doubles just by tweeking the bend in the wire. You can also remove it quite easily as well. The 2 sided tape is holding up fine to date, but it works so well, I may have it fastened on permantly in the near future.
