Delorme PN-20 or PN-40
« on: November 03, 2008, 05:24:30 PM »
After doing alot of research on the hand held GPS units I decided on the Delorme.  But the question is the PN-20 for $170 refurbished or the PN-40  for $340?

thanks
Doug

I would spend the extra money for the PN-40 because of the high sensitivity receiver.  Garmin is using the same chip set in some of its newer models.

I have not had my hands on the PN-40 but I have done side-by-side with the units with and without high sensitive receivers and it makes a difference in the woods.

ive got a pn20 and ive yet to find a spot where it didnt lock into satalites fast. even indoors or in a vehicle it doesnt falter. that been said its allways wise to buy the latest product. Theres a reason they updated it. It must be a better unit or theyd still be selling the pn20. By the way im very pleased with mine and there customer support is second to none!

Ok I took the plunge and purchased a PN-20.  I got what I feel is a very good deal on a used on off Ebay.

After a few hours it is a very nice unit.

dougk:  Did you get the full package with software, or the bare unit?

$95 for the PN-20, Topo 7.0 and the travel kit.

New would have been $250.

wow you stole that. i bought mine new with the travel kit and a car mount and have over 500 bucks into the whole deal with the extra chips i had them make. They will make you custom chips for your area if your like me and not good on a computer. I eventually figured out how to do it myself buy still hate doing things like that. Had to chuckle. this guy is sitting on the east coast and with a lat and long he emailed me an areal photo of my camp in less the 5 minutes. he downloaded all the areals and sat maps for a 250 mile area around my home and camp for the price of the chips. cant beat that. I had problems with one of my chargers and called them and they told me to toss it in the garbage and had a new one to me in two days. Ive found there customer service to be one of the best of any company ive ever delt with. these guys are a small company that is really trying to put something out there that is good quality with some features others dont have. they have to fight the name brand game as everyone in the US is convinced that garmin is the only way to go. Me i like the little guy. Like i said i just wish i would have waited for the 40.
