Buckshot anyone?
« on: November 04, 2008, 03:31:58 AM »
Anyone shooting buckshot through a smooth barrel, (500 synthetic)?  I have one with 2 choke tubes (full and modified), and was wondering if anyone had experience with shooting buckshot, and which one, OO, OOO, #4?   Thanks...

I use a 930 with a 18.5" barrel that is the same as the one on my 500 (cylinder bore). Shoot the Hornady TAP 00 @ 1600 fps. My pattern is 5-6 inches at 25 yards. It should be an attention getter! :o

Mark,

Are ya using it for defensive actions or hunting? For either, you'll need to pick some up and test it on a target and at different distances. Of the times I've played with buckshot, it didn't seem to pattern very well with FULL. For me, the larger buckshot needed less choke while the #4s liked modified. You shotgun will probably differ. There ain't one that'll do exactly what another will, it seems.

It is for hunting in some really thick stuff.  I shoot 3" # 4's mixed with a few 00's out of my defense gun.   Been considering crawling back in some really thick stuff beside a swamp on the local lease and using the Mossberg.   Will let you know if it works out..

Mine shoots best with Winchester Supreme 3" 000 buck using a Patternmaster choke tube. In fact the Patternmaster shoots groups twice as tight as the stock Mossberg full choke at 25 yards.

Try Tru-choke. I have one on my Mossberg 835 and my brother uses one on his 500. Try their full or extra full chokes. (Ask them and they are happy to give their opinion.) If you can keep a load of 00 or 000 pretty much inside a 20 inch circle it should be good to go. My brothers does this at 40 yards. (experiment and shoot different brands. I find plated works better. Yours may be different.) He shot a deer at 30 yards and it spin it around and pasted it to the ground. Very effective if you PATTERN your gun and watch your yardage.. Otherwise it is just a crippler. I couldn't live with that.
