Recent purchase, Remington 721 30-06

I recently bought this 1952 vintage Remington 721 in 30-06 caliber with a Bushnell ScopeChief II 2.5 x scope for $300 at a local gun store.  I may hunt deer with it next week. I  really like the older rifles.  Would you send it to Remington for the safety upgrade or keep it "as-is" ? Thanks for your replies.

Besides that, WHAT safety upgrade ?   I've never heard of one for that rifle, since I started shooting in 1958.
Please educate me.

BTW - I like the Williams QD scope mount !  I don't see many of them, these days.

For $20 plus shipping they will change the safety so you can open the bolt and remove or add ammo with the safety remaining on.  On mine the bolt is locked closed whenever the safety is on.  They will also inspect the safety for any unsafe conditions and replace it and the trigger if needed at no additional cost.

Don't let Remington screw up your rifle.  It's perfectly safe the way it was designed.

I'm no Remington expert, but I believe there were some AD issues with some of the older 700's.  My inclination is always to be on the safest side, so I would send it in. I don't think Remington is going to screw up your rifle and that is a very good offer. But that's me. Just my personal opinion.  No further debate needed.

This is not a Model 700.  The issues were with the operators, not the rifles.

I will attempt to add a link to the Remington site that describes the upgrade.  If my rifle is safe as it is, I doubt if I send it in. Shipping a rifle is always a little risky.

It really isn't an upgrade.  It makes it more likely that you'll pull the trigger and the gun won't go off because the bolt isn't quite all the way down and locked like it should be.

Well, you can pay the $20+, or not, your choice - but there's zero safety issue there.

There are, however, choices.

The way your rifle was issued, the bolt is locked closed when on safe, against accidental opening - say when hanging off your shoulder going through brush; or against a possible partial opening, thereby preventing a failure-to-fire when the trigger is pulled on an animal.

The "upgraded" way does allow unloading with the safety on - but also allows the bolt to open at any time - possibly un-noticed by the shooter, with the above consequences.

The issue system is plenty safe for unloading, especially if the operator only feeds the cartridge(s) from the magazine just enough to pop them free for manual removal, and not chamber/eject them.

 I have decided to leave it alone, if it has worked fine for over 50 years, it should be OK for a few more. Thanks for taking the time to write. It helped me with my decision.

Good choice, I've got 3 model 721s and none have had the safety "fixed".  There is nothing wrong with the safety, it's the people operating it that cause problems.
