I have the handi bug
« on: November 04, 2008, 04:19:02 PM »
My wife said I could get a new gun after the election.  I am really wanting to get a bull barrel handi in 223 Rem.  Is the accuracy pretty good out of the bull barrel?  I don't plan on shooting past 150 yards.  I will probably be shooting small Texas deer, and maybe a hog here and there.  Have yall been pretty happy with the .223 bull barrel?

I really like my 24" bull barreled Ultra, it shoots well under 1" 100yd groups with the 45gr Winchester White box ammo.  ;D

Nice work!  What shoots better in the new Handis, lighter weight or heavy weight bullets?  Is there a big gap in accuracy between the regular bull barrel and the Ultra Hunter line?  How is the price gap between the two?

There is no known cure for the handi-bug.
However, multiple purchases of barrels and complete
rifles makes you feel better!

At least, temporarily! Hah!  ;)

Welcome!!

Bull barrels tend to be more accurate, particularly after the barrel gets warm. Current production barrels have a 1:9" twist that will normally shoot heavier bullets than my older 1:12", but that's not written in stone, you'll just have to try different ammo to learn what it likes. The only way to know what the twist rate of any H&R 223 made between 2005 and 2006 is to check it with a rod as described in the FAQs under the twist rates, anything made in 2007 on should be 1:9", but that's probably not written in stone either, H&R doesn't even know!! I'd start with 55gr bullets, they should shoot good in both, but you'll want something heavier for deer/hogs, like the Win Power Point 64gr.

There's a couple threads down the page on selling prices, I won't go over them again.

As stated in my thread I started a while ago, and just bumped...

I was knocking out staples from my target at 50yrds with single shots, and just over 1/4" groups of 5 on sunday.

Am I happy with my .223 handi?  YES..

.223rem bull fluted w/BSA sweet .223 6-18x40

As for price.. I paid $182.95 for a used 22" bull .243 handi with cammo laminate monte carlo stock, add an additional $142 for the 24" bull flute shipped to my door.

They need to make a magic .223 handi barrel that will shoot everything perfectly.  That would make it a lot easier on me.

Have yall had much luck with used Handis?

I have two that aren't pleasing me.  Both new out of the box.  The ones bought used or pieced together used are all shooting.  The new ones that aren't where I want them now isn't their fault, it is mine for not getting it done.  They will shoot along with the rest of them.  To answer your question more directly, I can't see a difference between a new or used Handi, except you can probably buy two used for one new.  I like to do that. ;) ;)
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.
