Which to use?
« on: November 05, 2008, 08:35:26 AM »
My grandson is recoil sensitive. I have a 243 handy youth that shoots about 3.5 inch groups at 100 yds. I also have a .223 that shoots 1.5 to 2inch groups at 100 yds using Barnes TSX 53 gr. bullets. Any ideas as to which of the 2 he should use?

Which to use for what?  Hunting?  Target?  Just learning to shoot?

Sorry I didn't give enough info. This will be for whitetail deer out to 100 yds.. I am a seasoned shooter and can hold my own with the best of them with an accurate rifle. It's not me, I can asure you.

Jonny, you can get the 243 youth Superlight to be more accurate with a little forend work, see Synthetic Forend Floating in the FAQs on that, mine shoots 2" 3-shot 100yd groups with Rem 80gr Core-lokts. But even 3½" groups is fine as long as your son can do that with it, 6" groups will make meat at 100yds.  ;) I'd choose the one he shoots best, either will work for your purposes with proper shot placement.

thanks quick- I think the 243 has more punch than the .223. So we'll try the 243.

You also didn't tell us how old and how big your grandson is?   I Think as far as killing deer, either will work with a well placed shot.

IMHO the .223 is not a deer rifle, at least not for U.P. deer, perhaps Florida deer, especially in the hands of a youth.  But, I'm a big bore freak.  I suppose, because of that, we don't allow anyone to hunt deer on our property with .22/5mm rifles.  If they have nothing larger, we'll loan a rifle.  I have a real aversion to roaming the woods at midnight with a flashlight looking for wounded deer, and I've had to do it.

Now everyone will post how many deer they've killed with .22s.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

I tend to agree, especially since he is not an experienced hunter. Shot place is critical, but even more with a light caliber like a .223
