44 Mag/444 Marlin????

I have an H&R in 444 Marlin.  I was told by a friend that this barrel can also shoot 44 Mag.  Is this possible/advisable?  He assures me that he saw an H&R rifle that was stamped 44Mag/444Marlin on the barrel.  I looked at my barrel and it is stamped 444 Marlin only.

I haven't tried it but I heard you could in a pinch.  However, there is a long jump to the rifling for the 44 mag.  I also know that a 410 shotgun shell will also fit in a .444.

NO NO NO. Look at the cartridge specs this is not a smart thing to do. It's kinda like shooting a .22LR in a .22 Mag chamber. The case is gonna balloon out and might fail. Can you do it yes. Should you do it NO.

As has been said, the casehead specs are different, .457" vs .471",  if you're not concerned about high pressure gas at 36kpsi blasting past the ruptured case and thru the firing pin channel and breech at you, take your chances. The only thing H&R 44mags and 444s have in common is they were both 1:38" twist barrels at one time, current production .444 is 1:20".

At current prices buy the other barrel or whole assembly if you want to play around. It was good you asked but do heed the above replies. Why take chances?

IF he really saw such a thing, Id wager that it said 44Mag/445supermag.  Definitely not .444Marlin

Where can I find a case drawing for a .410 shothell (brass)
I thought .410 and .45 Colt were interchangable.

I do have a 444 Marlin case and I had some 410 shells. I am not positive on this, but I do not think the 410 will fit into the chamber. I think I tried it. Even if it did, there would not be enough room for crimp to open up into the chamber, it would open up at least partially into the rifling, even a 2 1/2" shell. Further, the rifling would spin the shot charge to the point of being useless past 10 feet.

AThe 410 shell will fit a 45 chamber, if the chamber is long enough to accommodate it. the 45/410 guns have a very long chamber/throat. It is so long that usually the 45's do not shoot that well. They usually have a screw in/on choke for the 410 that needs to be removed.

I don't own one, but I think the whole gun is a bad idea.  That's probably why I don't want one.

The picture posted by Cowboy453 is not a freak, one of kind that only happends occasionally.  The diameter of the 444 just ahead of the rim is larger than the 44 Mag and the 44 Mag case will either swell (usually offcenter) to fill the space or rupture as in the picture.  There is no support around the case and the results are always bad; the hotter the load, the worse the results.  I would do this only if the 44 Mag was the only bullet I had left and the bear was 5 feet away.  If the bear was 10 feet away, I would run first.

There are exceptions to the "not made for it" rule.  There are plenty of pistol type cartridges that offer this ability as a bonus.  Some examples are the 22 short, long and long rifle; the 38 spcl in a 357 Rem Mag.; the 32 H & R Mag and other 32???? in the new 32 Ruger Mag; the 40 S & W in the 10mm Revolver and the 44 Special in the 44 Rem Mag.  I understand where some of the belief that some cartridges can be fired in a similar chamber are rooted but those differences do not necessarily make the cross loading dangerous.  In the case of the 44 Mag in the 444 Marlin, the differences are dangerous and the practice should be avoided.

My guess on the 44Rem Mag / 444 Marlin stamp on the barrel is that that barrel started out as a 44 mag and was rechambered to 444 marlin.
