Topo 2008 and the Rino 530HCX
« on: November 07, 2008, 06:53:46 AM »
How do I get the most map detail from topo 2008 onto my Rino 530hxc. I got the whole state of maine on it but the detail is not as great as on the computer. Thanks for your help in advance. To change this do I have to delete the maps already on my SD card?

You do not need to delete and reload the maps on you Micro SD card.

There are a least two ways of getting to the same spot.  Here is one of them.

In the upper right hand corner of your screen you have two boxes, the Main Page Box in on the hard upper right and the Page Option Menu to the left.  The options change as you select different pages.

Select the Map Page, when you are on the Map Page use the Rocker and go to the Page Option Menu.  You will get a drop down.  From the drop down select the Setup Map Option.

If you want you can follow along on page 25 of your manual.

At the top of the Map Setup screen are six icons.  Select the Icon on the far left; this is the General Setup icon.

Following are the options and how mine is setup:

ORIENTATION-I have mine setup with Track Up so the pointer that depicts me is at the top of the screen and not going backwards if I am moving to the South.

BELOW:  I have chosen 30 feet.  If I choose a higher number it would revert to North up when I am in the woods.  Again I want the top of the screen depicting the direction I am moving.

AUTO ZOOM:  Currently I have it on, but it is subject to change.

DETAIL:  I have mine set on MOST be cause I want to see the maximum detail the map offers.

LOCK ON ROAD:  I have it on.

In response to another post I will cover TRACKS

Another option on the 530HCx is the Zoom Key located on the lower right corner of the unit.  Push and release the Zoom Key, and a zoom box appears on the screen.  You can scroll up and down the screen controlling area you are viewing.  Using this in conjunction with setting under the General Icon allow you to quickly move in and out of the map.

POINTS SET-UP ICON.  When out hiking or hunting I have selected  20 feet to get the most detail track

Oops! I promised another track to get the same results.  If you go to the Main Menu Page, select the SET-UP ICON, and then the MAP ICON you will find yourself on the track.

I wish that didn't read like Greek to me.  :o

I don't believe my brain is set up for this technical stuff. I was never able to master even my old Garmin GPS12XL and it's features. About all I was ever able to learn to do was to mark a waypoint and call it back up to go to it. I've long since forgotten how to do even that.

I'd love to get one of the newer more powerful and up to date units but every time I read your instructions to folks I realize just how technology challenged I am. When I tell folks that technologically I'm dumb as dirt it's not a joke.

I have to admit that I never thought of tech things.  When the teacher handed out homework it might have made it home to be ignored.  There was more important things to be taken care of; much of the year the focal point was fishing gear, trout, salmon, or steelhead.  When I grew up a little, a rifle or shotgun had my full attention in the fall.  As an older adult, the gps became an extention of my outdoor life and my career.

Being that English and grammar were not my favorite subject matter, at times I do not trust what I write.

My wife and I sit shoulder to shoulder at our respective computers in our computer room.  Today she was kind enough to take my 530HCx and follow the directions I posted.  She is NOT a gps person, but she programs the VCR/DVD recorder.

Today she sat here with the 530HCx in hand and followed the directions as posted.  This was done to ensure that my directions were clear.  She was able to follow the directions.

I benefit from the questions because they make me think and try the different options to see if they work.

I have, sitting on the back burner, a rough item to be posted. It was generated because of two events of lost or disorientated people in the Sierra Nevada in the last thirty days.  These could have had serious consequences.  Within a 15-mile circle a third event occurred in October in which a woman died of exposure.

If one of my posts keeps a person from spending a freezing night in the woods, I feel I have accomplished some good.

Oh I agree and if I had one in hand perhaps even I could follow the guidance. But when I take one of the manuals that come with such these days and try to read it I find it might as well be written in a foreign language as it's that unclear to me what to do. For some reason my brain just doesn't seem to comprehend this stuff.

I just wanted to thank you for the help. Your directions where very easy to follow.  Now I have another ? for you.   So it doesn't matter what scale or how much detail you have up on the computer when you send the maps to the Rino the detail is all there just need to zoom in to see it. Am I correct? John

John you are correct.  When you create a MapSet on the computer to be transferred to your unit the full contents of the selection will be sent.  You control what you see by zooming in and out.
