Today just ain't my day.....
« on: November 07, 2008, 10:50:21 AM »
Modern gun season opens tomorrow, so I was out with my Omega today to make sure that it's good to go.  Yeah, good thing that I did check it, because it wasn't good at all. I'm not sure what the problem was.  I shot it about 2 weeks ago, cleaned it completely, barrel, action, and breech plug.

Today it wouldn't fire at all.  5 primers and still no bang?   ???

So I pulled the plug, thinking that maybe the powder got damp (it's misting rain all day here), since it was one of my speedloaders left from ML season two weeks ago.  I'm looking at the plug, and I can't see any daylight through the orifice.  Hmmm...that doesn't make sense, as I always run a thin wire through the plug after cleaning it to make sure that the path is clear??  I know it was clear before I re-installed it after cleaning.   ::)

So I head home and try to clean the plug out.   When I try to run the wire into the orifice, it breaks off in the orifice.   :o

DAMN!  Can't get the piece out.  No one around here carries plugs for the Omega/Encore, even though they sell the guns.  THAT STINKS.   >:(

Guess I'll use the old '06 after all.  Anyone else having bad luck this year with equipment?  I blame my buddy Chad, he called me last week wanting to know if I could find another bolt for his Remmy 700, HE LOST HIS, during a move.  I've been cursed ever since it seems.

Had some trouble with the double triggers on my cva mountain rifle a couple days ago. I had to figure out how the heck they were set up and adjust them correctly. I also had an ordeal with it not being accurate with .018 or .020 patches. Went to town and they had 2 packages of .015 patches, I bought them both! Works perfect now.  Nov 12th is taking forever to get here!

I want to take a deer with the Omega so bad, it's making me crazy.  I had sworn to only use the ML until I killed one with it.

I thought, OK, I'll just grab the kids Wolverine Youth and get a slide on recoil pad to make the length of pull closer to what I need.  Grabbed the scope off the Omega, put it on the Knight, and headed out the door with my 30-06 as well.  Now we're cooking with gas, right?

Got to my father-in-laws house (I can get 80 yds in his drive), then realized that I'd neglected to tighten the scope rings around the scope tube...JEEZ.  I gave up,  I know it was the "Centerfire Remington Rifle" gods telling me to use the 7400.

My '06 wasn't even sighted in, I'd changed the scope and wasn't to worried about getting it zeroed, because of the T/C.  Now it's dialed in, and I have exactly 12 shells for it (my preferred load anyway) until I get back to Bass Pro.

Oh yeah, my "cursed" friend Chad called a couple of minutes ago, and I let him have it for passing bad luck along.   ;D  He just laughed.

Here is something I noticed on my ProHunter 209x50 with the 1/4 turn breech plug:

On the end of the plug where the primer sits is a narrow passageway for the primer flame to travel. It may be funnel shaped on the inside - not sure. Not many things will fit inside this passageway for cleaning so I decided to use a pipe cleaner and regular bore solvent. After a complete cleaning I inspected the flash hole just before reinstalling the breech plug. It was blocked by something because it was difficult to see light through the tiny hole. I pushed the T/C breech plug cleaning tool (wire) through the hole several times but it didn't do the trick. Eventually I used compressed air to blow through the tiny hole and out the other end. A tiny puff of material came out which was left behind by the pipe cleaner.

Since then I still use a pipe cleaner but almost always have the same problem. However, I am prepared to just blow it clear with compressed air. I would not use a pipe cleaner in the field or away from the house.

Anyone have a better tool to clean powder fouling from this narrow passageway?

I soak mine in #13 while I clean the rest of the gun, and after cleaning with a q-tip and toothbrush, use a drill bit (don't recall size off hand but it is a standard fractional) to clean out the primer pocket, then clean the flash hole with a torch tip cleaner.  Finish off with a squirt of brake cleaner.  I also keep a spare as they are hard to find locally and expensive to NDA from Cabelas.

Go to home depot or Loews and get a torch tip cleaner and find the right size and push it through the hole in the breech plug I think it will push your broken wire out of the plug.

I shoulda called this thread "It just ain't my weekend...".   Got done with work early on Saturday, I've had a cold for the past two weeks, by the time I got home from work I sounded like a 90 year old asthmatic chronic smoker/drinker.  Nothing that Dayquil won't fix, I thought.  I get down to the camp about 2pm, after a 90 mile drive, stopping for lunch and at Wal-Mart to get some supplies for dinner (and a new .17HMR Marlin rifle, spur of the moment, the only good part of the weekend  ;D).

By the time I got to camp, I was still hacking and wheezing, and to top it all off, I got the craps from lunch, I guess.  Not just the runs, oh yeah, it was too violent to even call it "explosive diarrhea".  Never even made it into the woods.  I had drank a whole BOTTLE of Imodium AD by the time I was to head back home, and it still was going strong.  Talk about an "crappy" drive back home....  I must have had to stop 20 times.  Sometimes there was a restroom, sometimes it was "over to rail and into the woods."  :P

All is good now, hopefully I'll get out tomorrow and see some deer.  The way things have been going, I'm not getting real hopefull though.   ::)

Kyle,
Before I load my muzzleloader I always pop two caps on an empty barrel.  If at the range I do it there.  If I'm going  hunting I will do it in my garage before I head out.  Before you go to bed, make sure to tell your wife that she will hear two loud pops at 4:00 in the morning and not to worry.
Firing two caps seems to make sure that the nipple is clear.  I don't worry about the odor.  It works for me.
I hope your luck improves,
Bill
