7mm-08 for elk

What do you guys think about the 7mm-08 for elk out of an encore pistol?  sufficient power out to 200 yards or even a little more?  140 gr or 160 gr?  With that short barrel will it stabilize the 160's ok?  thanks!

Good question. I looked up the 7mm-08 in the Lyman 49th Edition and the heaviest jacket bullet shown is the 154 grain with a speed of about 2200 fps. This may no be the all around best elk cartridge but a well placed shot should be fine. Many of the people on this site like a bigger bullet but most will admit that it comes down to shot placement. The round should be flat shooting and plenty accurate. I hope that helps.

If you are handloading for it i would use a 160 accubond or bonded bullet i would keep my shoots inside 150 160 yrds. Use a good rest and practice ALOT.

I was unable to get the 160's to shoot very good in my gun. 140 barnes triple shock would be my thoughts. It shoots great in my gun and penetrates deep.

I would use the 140 to 150 grain Nosler Partition, which ever shoots best.

If you feel you need a copper bullet, don't use Barnes, use the new Nosler 150 grain E-Tip.
-The new E-Tip can be loaded like anyother bullet and doesn't suffer the high pressure as the Barnes bullets.
