Fastest burning powder for 308 rifle?
« on: November 08, 2008, 03:56:52 PM »
I have a New England Handi Rifle 308 with a 22 inch barrel 1-12 twist. I need to know the most accurate fast burning powder for this rifle and best load for 150 grain bullet?

WHY? Are you operating under some mistaken impression that faster burning powders are best? Hint: They aren't. Help us understand what's going on in your mind and we'll try to help.

I'm thinking that with this 22 inch barrel I need a powder that would handle a 150 grain bullet. This is my first handi so I need some help. If not the fastest burning powder what about the best load for 150 grain bullet?

In the 308 the 22" is standard, so thinking you NEED a fast powder is not true.

Unfortunately, no one can tell you what will be best for your gun, as everygun is different. Much like people different guns, like different powders and even different bullets for that matter.

There are a number of good powders you could try. (4895, 3031, 4320, 4064, 4350, WW748 are but a few) Your best bet is to check different loading manuel's or REPUTABLE on-line sources. http://www.handloads.org/loaddata/default.asp?Caliber=308%20Winchester&Weight=150&type=rifle&Order=Powder&Source=Winchester is one.

I do not load it with the 150gr, I prefer the 165gr bullet and use 4320 powder.

I have had great accuracy results with Allient Reloader 15 and the 150 grain bullets in my 308 rifles.

QuickLoad 3.4 shows IMR4895 to have over 99% burn efficiency and high load density in the 22" barrel behind 150gr bullets, that's what I'd choose looking at Hodgdon and Hornady data which both support that.  ;)

Loading manuals are generally laid out so that the fastest suitable powders are either at top or bottom of the page. Most times at the top. In my personal experience best accuracy normally comes from those in the middle of the suitable burn range for any given round. In other words if ten powders are listed the couple at top and bottom are the least likely to be most accurate in my experience.

I'm with GB on this one , I have found that the top and botton powders in FPS also do not give the best accuracy , some of my best groups were shot with loads that were in the middle of the road for burn rate as well as FPS .

i have always been preferable to varget.  holds itself well in a larger outdoor temperature range and works great in my 308's.  around 44-45 grains under a 168 gr. hornady A-max perform well for me.
