Half moon clips for 625-2--are they available??
« on: November 08, 2008, 10:43:59 PM »
I have a S & W 625-2 in .45 ACP.  It came with one pair of half moon clips.  I tried to buy extra half moon clips from S & W only to have them back ordered because they were discontinued.  I bought their full moon clips.  They function well in my gun but are a "pain" to load and unload.  Some aftermarket full moon clips I've tried are too thick and/or warped and bind up my cylinder. Ranch Products have full moon clips that work well and are "slightly" easier to load and unload but not by much.  Their 1/3 moon clips bind my cylinder when 3 are inserted.  My personal preference is for the half moon.  I saw some on the web for $6.99 each. (S & W wanted $1.94 per pair--discontinued). Does anyone have a lead or source of half moon clips that work well in the 625-2 .45 ACP.  Thanks for any help. :)

John:  get ahold of SAMCO, SARCO, Gun Parts Corp, MidSouth (one of our sponsors) and possibly Brownells - one of them should carry the plain old mil-spec half moon clips and they will probably work best in your 625.  HTH.  Mikey.

The half moon clips are few and far between to find. Myself I like the full moon clips. I use a demooner and a remooner tool to load the clips. Dillon Precission carries them.

Thanks for the help guys.  I think I checked Midsouth and Brownel's and they showed "out of stock-discontinued".  I'll try the other 2 references.  If no luck I'll try the de and re mooners before I'll pay 7 times the regular price for half moons.  To me the half moons were easy to twist and roll a cartridge in and out.  Thanks again.

You can easily make a demooner from a short piece of half inch conduit. I personally like the moon clips because they function as a speed loader - although I use .45AR brass mostly in the 25 and 625.

I always inspect my moon clips for burrs and deburr them with a Dremel or other hand grinder. I then use a small very fine grit polishing burr to round off the tips on the clips. Any small burr tends to gouge the brass and make demooning more difficult. Good luck. I strongly suggest trying .45AR brass.

I have about 50 of them coming from a mixed order of 45 Auto rim brass, full moon clips and half moon clips that I probably won't be useing.   Send me an e mail if you might be interested in them
