I consider the Rockchucker press to be a VERY GOOD basic single stage press.  Been using one for 30+ years and it's served me well.  For the type of shooting/loading I do, I've never felt the need for a turret or progressive press so can't comment on them.

I have a Rock Chucker and it has served me well for over 25 years and is still my one and only press. Is this a used press? I think this press has been replaced by the Rock Chucker Supreme. The Rock Chucker will handle all of your needs in the 30-06 class of cases and smaller. I am not sure if it will handle the long magnums. I think the Rock Chucker Supreme came out to handle the longer cases and handles primers a little better. Handling primers is my one and only complaint about the Rock Chucker. It came with a tray that snaps on around the press that catches the spent primers as they are pushed out of the case. A lot of the spent primers fall on the floor. I ended up getting cheap Lee press just to push primers out of the cases and to pull bullets. When you get your press, just make sure it is of cast iron construction, it will last you a life time, color (brand) really does not make that much difference. Another thought is to get as many reloading books as you can lay your hands on; get as many as you can afford, then buy one more. Just one more thought, if you are just starting out some times a kit can be a cost effective way to get most of your items you need to get started; just make sure a cast iron press is at the center of the kit. I started those many years ago with a new press and then bought used equipment when I could and added new when I could not. it takes longer than getting a kit, and probably costs more in the long run. Good Luck and Good Shooting

Single stage pressess are, IMHO, the best tool for beginners.

With a couple of exceptions, most makers "top of the line" single stage pressess ARE "mid-range" and they are all very good.  Hornady's LnL, Lyman's Crusher, RCBS' Rock Chucker, Redding's Boss, Lee's Classic Cast are ALL tied for tied for second place.  They stand close behind Forster's CoAx and Reddings UltraMag, tied for first place, but even then there is very little difference in practice.

Those who would argue for their favorite as "best" would have to bring actual comparitive measurements of the ammo or groups it makes to prove it, not opinion or "it works for me", and they can't do that.  (Actually, Lee's Classic Cast has the most helpful user features AND it's the least expensive!)

That said, if you have a good offer on any of them, take it.

I have loaded 300 RUM on my Rockchucker and it is not the supreme.  So magnum length cases can be loaded with it you just have to tilt the bullet and angle it up to get it on top of the case.  It really isn't that hard although I would prefer some extra room, but I don't think it is required.

I don't know if RCBS makes a higher end single stage press than the Rockchucker. The Chucker is a well built & should last a life time & beyond. Even with 2 Dillon 550's, I still use my Rockchucker quite a bit for loading target rifle rounds & working up new hand gun loads.

Many many years ago the Rockchucker was the bar that all other manufacturers strived to reach.  You can spend more money or less money but the best you will do in the end is to equal the quality of the Rockchucker and some won't even do that.

If you have a deal on one as you've stated, get it.  You won't be disappointed.  It will load most anything you will likely ever want to load with the exception of 50BMG.

Along the lines of what wncchester said, I would delineate those presses in his "2nd place" group into two sub groups that I would rank 2nd and 3rd place overall. Some presses in that group, including the Lee Classic Cast (iron) and Redding Big Boss II, dispose of spent primers and debris down through their hollow rams, into a tube to a bucket, catch bottle, etc., and I would rate only them as 2nd place presses. The 1st place UltraMag and Co-Ax presses also have this feature. The Lyman, RCBS, and Hornady presses all have plastic contraptions that fit around the ram and manage to catch some of the mess, but miss a lot of it, demoting them to 3rd place.

Poo. If you have a good deal on a RockChucker, by all means get it. The warranty is lifetime, whether you buy it new or used.

If you need something different, Get the Supreme model or a Redding Big Boss...Green is good, no matter what shade....

Big Jake J1s,

Actually, I agree completely with your division of presses.

I just din't want to say it as clearly as you did because some folks get pretty riled if anyone disagrees with their personal opinon on the color of pressses (or anything else), never mind the facts!  ;)
