Interarms Mauser in . 270 Pics
« on: November 09, 2008, 04:55:00 AM »
I want to shoot it some before I do anything to it.  The stock will probably get refinished after hunting season.  The scope will get replaced after I shoot it a little bit.

Beautiful old gun.

You have indicated in another thread that if it doesn't prove to be a shooter you are going to have it rebarreled in 35 Whelen.  Why did you pick 35 Whelen?  Nostalgia or are do you think the 35 Whelen has advantages over the the 338 rounds.  Personally I have been wondering about perceived recoil.  The charts I have found show the 35 Whelen's recoil to be only slightly greater than the 30-06.

I already have a .30-06, and I don't really care for most of the other .30-06 length cartridges.  The .35 Whelen would make a fine elk gun IMO.  The .338-06 is a wildcat, and I prefer to be able to buy factory ammo if I need to.  The .338 Federal is interesting but I don't care for short cartridges.  I am also considering the 7X57.  I'm hoping it shoots fine as is  because I don't want to sink a barrel of money into it.

I actually shot my Wheelen today and as , far as recoil goes, The Wheelen is pretty tame for a 35 cal. My rifle gives me a push rather than a smak. I have a limbsaver on my rifle but even without it, the kick is really not so bad at all.  I was shooting 225 gr Accubonds at 2775.

how timely,

I came back from Tulsa yesterday with an Interarms Mark X full stock in 7x57 that looks to be practically NEW for only $500

I'm gonna install a WGRS receiver sight on this beauty, I'll post pics later

Beautiful 270 swamp , I doubt you'll be rebarreling it

That's one of the reasons I'll refinish the stock.  It's too shiny!

Hmmm if its just too shiney then why not take the shine off with some wet and dry paper or wire wool, assuming that the finish is in tact other wise, that's how I understand lot's of folks do it with Tru Oil finishes.

Other folks got their 270 digs in on your last post about the rifle, but I restrained myself. But I can't keep it in any longer, Swampy, you better not shoot it unless you are prepared to sell some 06s. I would offer to help you out and take one or two off your hands, but who would want one.

It will be my beater deer rifle.  If I ever get to hunt elk or the greater bears, I'll need the .30-06.

At a quick first glance, I thought it was an older Remington BDL Deluxe!  Looks great.

Yeak I thought it looked kinda of Remington like but hopefully it would feel better as the 700 just doesn't feel right to me. It was obviously aimed at the American Market for the style and finish as that super shiney finish seemed to be popular. Both BSA and Parker-Hale offered it on their export models some of which seemed to stay here in the UK.

I looks quite similar, but it feels a little better.  I like the Model 700BDL.  I hope it shoots like a Remington.

I had a Herters J9 which was basically the same thing I think. It had a military trigger, but that never bothered me. I never was happy with the way it grouped though. That is because I had been spoiled by a Rem 721.

Looks good.  The shiny finishes are pretty, but I like a low key stock finish on hunting guns.  Let us know how it shoots.

Swamp,

These rifles usually have a rather long throat, so ya might not be able to seat any bullets out to the riflings. That being said, a long throat hasn't ever stopped any of mine(243,7 Mag, 300WM) from shooting under an inch, consistently, with the right loads. That shiney stock and Ebony tip ,would make it a Viscount model if I'm not mistaken.

Enjoy shooting it!
