A couple of cannon-related flea market item...
« on: November 09, 2008, 03:32:59 PM »
Picked up a couple of items at a large flea market yesterday. No cannons there. I did run across a guy selling ridiculously overpriced relics who had a couple of iron shot. They weren't 'cannonballs' as he claimed, too small and roughly cast, probably grapeshot. He wanted to keep them a lot worse than I wanted to buy them.

I've been looking for a small barrel to serve as a display powderkeg. The only thing I found was this old Briggs tobacco barrel:

Engraving closeup:

It's too large to be correct scale for a powderkeg, but not as a storage barrel. With its removeable lid, it'll make a good container for small accessories:

The other thing I bought is this iron wine bottle holder:

Reminded me of this miniature (airline bottle size) that I have:

I don't drink, but it can hold my big bottle of locally produced Georgia Cane Syrup.

:) :D ;D

Perhaps a model of the original demi-cannon?

I finally got around to measuring the barrel, it's 7.188" high x 5.450" bilge diameter.

In relation to the quarter-scale Napoleon, a full-sized barrel would be approximately 28¾" high x 21¾" bilge diameter.

According to my research, this is roughly the size of a 30 gallon whiskey barrel.

I didn't realize that over a month had passed.

I've been wanting to get a photo of the wine caddy in action. Problem is, wine is an extremely scarce commodity around here. I don't drink at all (even when I did, I didn't drink wine) and the wife very rarely does.

I finally went out and bought a bottle, just for a photo. Then it got pushed aside and forgotten for a week.

But finally I took the time to set up a photo of the cast iron wine caddy with a bottle of Aussie Yellow Tail Chardonnay on board.

Now I can give the bottle to my wife. And she'll probably welcome it seeing as how she's freshly unemployed.

And will probably never see her final paycheck (two full weeks plus overtime).

She's not happy...

Terry,

Sorry to here about your wife losing her job, I hope things work out for the best.

You recently had a post about a brass .75 cal. ball mold you had picked up somewhere, but I can't find the thread; would you give me a hand here?

Yeah the wife is bummed. She loved that job (daycare) and the kids she cared for. A lot of these kids came from less than stellar home environments and Pam was sometimes the most stable person in their lives.

But when the bank comes'a knockin'...

When I saw the picture of the bottle holding cannon carriage that Terry posted, it reminded me of this little decorator that I have had for a while now.
It has to be from the same fabricator and it is all cast iron.

That same iron decorator carriage design was originally sold with a brass barrel.  I saw those for sale in the UK back around 1970.  I had not seen any of the iron barrel versions until recently.

Very similar, almost identical even, but enough subtle differences to tell that they weren't cast from the same pattern.

I've been considering making a non-firing display barrel for this one, since it won't see much (if any) use for its intended purpose beyond a few novelty photos.

It has a little more rust on it than what shows in the photos. It needs to be disassembled, cleaned, and repainted. While it's down I plan to make tracings of the plates.

I might even use it as a porch ornament, but it'll have to be fastened down or it may get stolen.

Why? Why non-firing?   ;D

I'm not sure how much abuse these iron plates could handle.

So how are you gonna know if you don't find out?   ;D
