African Warthogs?

Are they good to eat? Are they similar in taste to wild or domestic hogs in the U.S. How come nobody has ever brought them here for hunting? Will they mix with regular hogs?

I can not personally attest to this, but I read in a hunting report (can't remember which site) that they had Warthog roasted in a pit of coals (IIRC) and it was the best eating they ever had.

One thing is for sure, nothing gets wasted over there if it has any use whatsoever.

go to south africa.  a co-worker went there and wart hogs were one of the animals that was affordable to hunt.   he went, shot 3 animals, all for under 5000.  the catch was that he had a group he went with and that was part of the lower price.

If you know someone that is going see if you can tag along as an observer. My wife went as an observer and my PH was fine if she wanted to hunt because we would just be switching roles for that stalk. The trophy fee on a Warthog was $300 and there was none of the escalating fee stuff where the price goes up per inch. Impala are also inexpensive to hunt. Heck, since we flew on air miles my hunt for Kudu, Gemsbok, Impala, and Warthog was less than an Elk hunt and many of the Texas trophy Whitetail hunts.

Do some research, africa[for plains game], is surprisingly affordable.  4 of us did a 10 day, 6 animal pkg. for about $5,100.  The animals included kudu, gemsbok, blue wildebeast, impala, blesbok, and warthog.  The pay out is over 3 yrs.  What makes africa expensive, is the air flight, and how crazy you get with the taxidermy.  My son and I are looking at going back in the next 2 yrs.

Amen on the taxidermy being an expensive part of the cost!!!! I could almost afford a second hunt if it weren't for the taxidermy, but they will look good on the wall.

A fellow that runs a game ranch gave the answer that the U.S. Gov't won't allow game ranches here to import warthogs as the breed is close enough to our domestic hogs that they might bring in a disease that could wipe out domestic hogs in the long run.

Does that mean they can interbreed like the European/Rusian boars do with feral hogs?  I have heard that when there are Russian boars in the area, they will take over the feral pig populations and eventually all the pigs in the area will have a russian strain in them.  I wonder who would win out between the russians and the warthog?

What we didn't eat, the camp staff did.  Nothing is wasted over there.

We had eland steaks on the grill that were as good as any filet mignon you ever had.  We also had kudu bratts[yum!], and kudu spagetti and meatballs.  We had gemsbok game pie.  My favorite was blue wildebeast enchiladas with chipole sauce.  The 1 thing I wanted to try was BBq warthog ribs, but that didn't happen.

Like I told a guy, I didn't fly halfway around the world to eat a Big Mac!

Let's think about this, every time someone has a brite idea, like this, another eco system here in north America goes squirrely? I think importing this creature is a bad idea? Let's leave nature alone.
