Should I have bought it??
« on: November 10, 2008, 05:49:53 AM »
Found a contender with serial # under 195,000. I think I read on here they were not as good. Anyway it had a 10" 357 mag octagon barrel and a Leupold scope for $400 and I let it go. When I went back later to try dealing it was already gone. Then my brother and I split up to look for more and he found a 30 Herrett for $325 and the guy had 5 other barrels for $125 each. Naturally my brother could not find me until we met back at the car so I went home empty handed. Guess I will have to keep enjoying the hunt for an encore or contender pistol.
Thanks,

A local shop has a new looking Super 14 in .357 Max with the best looking wood I've ever seen.  They want $300.00.  I'd love to have it myself.  $400.00 with the Leupold doesn't sound too bad to me.

You wont find many 14" max barrels.  For the price, if as new, I would grab it!!

I just paid nearly $250.00 for a nice old frame (no wood, no barrel)!  I'd say that was a deal!  Maybe I need a psychiatrist! ;D

Ease up a little.  He may be the normal one, and the rest of us inflicted with Contenderitus.

I bought a frame like that once. They're just hard to open and sometimes, they just don't. They're alright but, I resold mine and found late model easy-open frames. Last frame I bought was when the G-2 came out. You could buy the G2 for $280, some guy with an easy-open wanted $290 for it (?)! Ten bucks more than brand new? I said NO, won't give that much for it. Never really regretted it.  You can play around with reselling what you don't want-or- just don't buy it in the first place(which is best anyway).

Five years down the road-what was I thinkin'?

The last Contender I bought(just after the G2 was released). I found a set consisting of a frame, 2 pairs of grips(hunters & pachmayrs) two factory forends, 2 super 14 barrels a 30-30 with iron sights & a 223 with no irons just a pistol scope (no not a leupold {I wish!}) All 3 came in a regular plastic 4 gun case. cost was $350.00. I don't think I grabbed it fast enouigh<VBG>. this gave me a total of 3 frames and a bunch of barrels(not too sure of the actual number hav'nt counted them in just over a year - been ill).
grips forends a pair of leupold pistol scopes (a 2 & 4 x EER) An assortment of scope mounts including the now discontinued quick disconnect mount. collecting contender guns, barrels, and just "stuff" is fun.
If you collect Contenders and your not a menber of TCA you should be. I love the quaterly magazine.

I've noticed that Old Contender frames, G2 frames, and Encore frames (assuming that they're all used, blued, in good condition) sell for nearly the same price.  I guess that the Old Contenders are holding their own against the newer models.  I like them all, and wish I had a sack-full!
