.223 10FP Shooting Results

I finally got a chance to shoot some more this evening. Here is my setup...

My wife sewed me some sand bags from some extra material we had and they came in handy.
I shot the Federal 50gn first and was getting like before just a hair over 1 inch groups at 50 yards. Then I started shooting the Hornady 75gn and man could I see a difference. I was actually able to turn my scope in with these loads. I then for the first time since Ive had this gun moved and shot from 100 yards and I must say that I was impressed.
This first one was a 4 shot group. I can only see 3 holes but I shot 4 times...

This next one was a three shot group...

I really do feel like if I had a better steady rest and a higher powered scope that I could have some fun with this rifle.
P.S. This is the first time in my life shooting this type of accuracy at this range and I thinks its cool and really wish I had more time and money
Thanks again for all the help. The only thing I dont like about this rifle is how much it weighs but I knew that when I bought it. If some day I can buy the same kind of rifle with the regular barrel and get close to the same results then I believe I will trade or sell it.

Understand your fellings Coffee.Had no idea I could shoot that well until I got hold of a 10fp.Don't be suprised if you can put ten shots at 100 yards into a hole you can cover with a dime.They're great shooters.Imagine what a good handload can do.

Good shooting. Do not be surprised if you do not shoot a whole lot better with a higher powered scope, especially with your shooting set up. There are steadier ones out there.

Just a thought...You can pick up Savage take off barrels relatively cheap. You may consider swapping out the barrel rather than trade it off if you want a lighter weight gun.

That sounds great.
1 - Do you know a good place I can buy these barrels ?
2 - Is this something a gunsmith needs to do ?
3 - "Apples to Apples" whats the price difference between HB and sporter barrel ?
Im thinking that I really hate to mess with something thats shooting this good right now.

1. Here is a link to a place that has used Barrels http://www.switchbarrel.com/SAV_SALE.htm You have to call to find out what is available. You can call barrel makers such as ER Shaw, Shilen, Douglas, etc to see if they have any take off barrels for Savage available. They are sporadic so you have to call once in a while to see if they have any in the chamber you want. Here is another place that has take off available from time to time. They sell new barrels and parts for Savage rifles - it is their specialty. http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/
2. You can do it your self with a few simple tools. If you are really serious about it, give me a PM and I will tell you what you need.
3. As far as a take off, no difference. New, no difference unless you want to have a custom profile. All barrels start life as a big fat barrel, they just turn it down to size you want. Most of the time they are a standard profile. Sporter is usually the thinner barrels and varmint or target are the heavier ones.

If you have a rifle that shoots well, you should think twice about messing with it. Some times you will not do as well by changing some thing as major as a barrel. The barrel (which includes the chamber) probably has more to do with accuracy than any other component on a rifle. The trigger is next followed by the action, bedding, stock etc. Not necessarily in that order. Good Luck and Good Shooting

Thanks for the help and links LaOtto222. I didnt realize these were an option. I dont believe at this time I want to get into changing the barrel. Right now Im looking for close up pictures of open sights.
