Put your mortar on a diet...

 I was looking for a cheap source of wooden balls for use in my BNA cork mortar and found these. My mortar's bore is .755", so hopefully the 3/4 ones will fit.

 Anyone here ever use wood balls in cannons/mortars?

"The Cannon Diet", yep, wooden balls for my 2.25" bore Howitizer. Kinda light, but lots cheaper than lead! ("Red Bull" can...just right!) Looking for them for the Mortar, 3" wooden...humm, wonder if a croquet set would be the right size? Tennis ball too small, baseball too expensive, softball too big, ..."Hunts" Tomato Sauce, 15oz...Just right! (Diet, of course!) BoomLover

 Standard billiard balls are 2.25". I got some used ones off of ebay for less than $1 each. At 6oz, a lot heavier than wood...

 I did actually think about using wood balls in the Rhodes 1-inch bore Gribeauval mortar. The hardest, densest, heaviest wood that I know of is Lignum Vitae, sometimes called ironwood. I searched the net and the only L/V balls I could find were made for a British pin game called skittles, and the smallest balls that I found for sale are 3-inches in diam and you get three balls for $253.00. As thelionspaw would say, fuggetebotit. Wood vendors do sell small cubes of Lignum Vitae, and I suppose balls could be turned from them, but that seems like a lot of trouble to go to.

what size Red Bull cans are you using in your 2.25 inch and what is the O.D. of them?

I checked out some that I found in the trash at work and they were way to small for my 2.25 inchers. Do they come in different sizes?

 I've seen three sizes of Red Bull cans. The 11oz ones measure 2.26". Starbucks Iced Coffee comes in this same size can, and tastes a lot better than Red bull  ;)
