Winchester Model 94 question
« on: November 11, 2008, 06:06:20 AM »
I am looking at getting a model 94, where is a good place to find these?  I am not set on a cal. yet, probably 30-30.  Any advice on these is welcome.  Thanks

About any place that sells used guns.  I guess I see hundreds for sale at any large gun show, and bigger sport shops like Cabelas will have racks full of them.  The majority will be 30-30, but others are found as well.

I haven't looked for some time.  Pre 64s will run over $400 fairly regularly around here.  For a little while later 94s were going for at least that much.  I figure I got over $600 for the 30-30 AE I swapped for a Glock 19 and other stuff when the market went crazy.  I would bet they are down around $200-300 again for the common models.  Check on the auction sites and see what they are selling for, not what some are asking.

I find them in our local trading paper in the $250 area as often as I do the higher prices. May depend more on condition of the rifle than anything. Some local auctions have them along with the usual furniture and stuff. Just takes a bit of digging.

in my northeastern pennsylvania pocono mountains area , you can find a used m94 in .30-30 for about $250.00 to $600.00 dollars depending on the condition and the seller. just depends on how long and hard you're willing to look . ;D

I picked one up at a local pawn shop for $150 in very good cond. It was shooting to the left and I had to adjust front sight, it's dead nuts now. One of my favorite hog guns. They are every where where you find guns for sale.

I know there is a big thing for the pre 64 model 94's,  but if you find them made from about 1971 till they sold out,  you'll get a good one and not have any funny safeties on them either.  From what I've read, they made them with some cheaper parts from 64 to about 1970 (like pins and lifters) and then it seems they put the good parts back in them about 71...maybe because of customer complaints, don't know.  Two of my friends have 94's made in 1971 and 74, and they are every bit as good as my 1963 model I have now.  A friend of mine just picked up the 1971 model for $245 bucks.   Search the news papers, bargin corners, and take your time looking, get some information on the serial numbers and what year they were made and take that with you when you look at them,  you can know what year they were made, or even if they were made Winchester before they were sold out.  Gun shows seem to ask too much for them, unless you can talk them down.  There are still a whole bunch of them out there,  I am seeing them for sale a lot in the local news papers here.

I've had two made in the late '70's - some of the internals were stamped parts instead of milled steel, but they were just as smooth as my old 1927 model 94. One of them actually was more accurate, and the other wasn't terribly bad. I'm sure it was the peep sight that made the difference. Happy shopping!!
