20ga slug and chokes question
« on: November 11, 2008, 09:21:21 AM »
Looking to buy 2x 20 ga shotguns for my boys.  I consider the 20 gauge a do all gun.  Since they are 9 and 11 I heistate to buy 12ga for them.

My question is what chokes can a 20ga slug be shot through.  I know the .410 is forgiving enough to be shot through the full if necessary but are the 20s as forgiving?  Both already have the .22lr and .410 youth combos but I hesitate to let them hunt deer with a .410.

I shoot the plain Rem sluggers through my full choked 20 ga with no problems and great accuracy out to 75 yds.

The old style fixed chokes there is no danger at all.
Generally newer manufactures suggest against shooting thru the tighter SCREW-IN chokes. If you have screw in chokes I would just invest in a rifled tube for it.

BUT, best accuracy usually comes from Cylinder or Imp Cylinder.

get them 20ga with choke tubes. It might just be the most versatile and practical gun going.sb2-25c might just be the perfect gun.

SB2-25c?  I know the diffrence between the SB1 and SB2 but what is 25C?

I like the idea of the screw-ins but have a line on a used 20 with a full (I think) barrel.

Any other opinions or rather facts about slugs through a full choke barrel?

Thanks.

The foster type slugs will shoot fine thru the full choke barrel. Try a couple or three different brands and use the one that shoots best.

I meant sb1-25c. that is the model # for the 20ga compact pardner with 22" barrel threaded for choke tubes and youth stock http://www.hr1871.com/Firearms/Shotguns/pardnerScrewIn.asp

If you have shotgun that takes choke tubes, use either a cilinder bore or improved cilinder choke. The foster slugs will squeeze thru any choke, but shoot more accurately from the open bored guns.

HI guys, Not to hijack this thread, but i am in the same situation with my 12 year old girls.

Is there any way to put rifle sights on these guns?

OR does anyone make a 20 youth with a slug barrel?

One of my girls is a lefty, and at this time i would like to have them share the same gun

NEF makes the tracker II in 20 ga. It is equiped with sights.  You can always do what I did when my son was young. I cut the stock to fit him and put on a slip on recoil pad.I kept the piece I cut off and when he grew I screwed and glued it back in place. The only visible evidence of this being done is a very fine line on the stock where the peice was reattached.
