Spare Ammo Carrier?
« on: November 12, 2008, 07:36:30 AM »
I need to find or come up with a good way to carry a couple of extra rounds for my Contender while hunting.

I use a nylon ammo carrier on my belt but here in Georgia it sometimes gets buried under layers of clothes. Our climate might be 32 degrees at daylight, 70 at noon and back to freezing by dark. If I am sitting in a tree stand that usually means jacket on/off/on and the spare round is lost in a pocket.

I have seen the wrist holder but that presents the same problem. I have attached a ammo carrier to my bandolier holster but it is usually hanging on the tree with my pack as I prefer to hold my Contender all the time while hunting.

I would really like something that would hold two rounds and maybe have a clip for attaching to clothes or whatever or even hang around my neck.

Anybody ever see or make anything like what I am thinking? This would be for a 7-30 or similar sized cartridge.

Thanks

How about a bullet slide to put on your belt. Just a sleeve that slides in your belt that has loops on it to hold your bullets. If you are interested the cowboy shooters may be able to help you find something.

could get the holder that attaches to bandoleer and hang it from a string on your neck instead of attaching to bandoleer
Thanks,

I believe that TC makes a rubber type ammo holder that attaches to the forearm. I have seen them on ebite. you may want to check there website. I use a modified wrist band that I wrap around the forend so that the xtra rounds are right on the forend.

Mines a continuous wrap and will do the same, basically from 18" to 5" circumference. Then again, I will make them however you want.

you can do what I did one year when I used a single shot riffle I rolled the round in a piece of paper then duct taped it to my tree stand leaving the head of the bullet exposed to get it out with I did 3 of them 2 of them stayed on the stand most of the year  D Crockett

I made a couple of ammo holders out of an old 2 piece arrow quiver made by hoyt. Both the broadhead end and the end that holds the arrow shafts will work for just about any common sized round. I used the lower shaft holder for .243. The one for holding the broadheads can be made to hold any size you want. You just custom fit the foam insert.

Either piece can be mounted to a tree or stand (as mine was) with a little thought as they are already designed to be mounted to a bow. I'm sure there other brands that will work just as well. Probably could find them pretty cheap to darn near free, if you look around a bit. Internet, rummage sales, buddies, you know.

I should say the hoyt arrow quivers are not really cheap if you buy them new. I already had a couple laying around from all the mix-matching of bows and parts that I've accumulated. Tht;s why I used that one. Otherwise I'd look for another brand if that's the way you want to go.

I've used one of the rifle buttstock ammo holders slightly modified for this. I'd slit one side and open it up. Then my wife would sew some thing like Velcro fasteners on it. You can have as many as 9 rounds on your fore arm ready to use. It can be removed and put back on in a second or 2. You can wrap it around a convenient branch or even strap it to your leg with longer straps. Cut it shorter for LESS rounds if that's your pleasure. I found 3 straps to be best, one on each end and 1 in the middle. .IF YOUR arm is thin enough, you could use it as is, they are somewhat elastic!
maybe dave could whip one up for you!?

I have an ammo carrier that looks similar to the one that Dave makes.  Mine is made with elastic band and velcro.  It will fit around my bicep muscle  or forearm area without a problem, no matter what I am wearing.  I have also carried a couple of extra shot shells in one of my old duck call carriers around my neck.  They have a spring on the cord that provides the tension.  There is enough tension for a 30-30, 7x30W, or about any rimmed shell casing.  I carry my contender in a shoulder holster when hunting.  I have one of the shell carriers that you slide on a belt over one of the straps.  I have 10 shots that sit right next to the holster.  Mine is comfortable so I dont have to take it off.  I can also close it inside my jacket to keep gun and ammo dry.

Just another couple of ideas to help you out.

Steve :)

I went to the tripple K catalog and got the leather ammo box that holds 120 rounds of 22LR  loose or two paper boxes full for my 223 ammo.  It will hold 40 223 or 22 hornet rounds and works great.  when I start to run low and larger shells bang around I stuff a bandanna in it to keep everything quiet.

Buy or make one of the Wrist Straps but make it too fit around your Ankle over your Boot
If it where me , I would make a permanent stitched one right into my Boot A  Bandoleer type with maybe 2 to 4 Round capacity
Now I wrote this, I think I'll make one ...LOL
