Greeting and Delayed Range Report
« on: November 12, 2008, 04:43:58 PM »
Greetings to all.   Last spring I was having problems with my handi 30-30.  Lockup was snug but not even across the shelf.  Sent if off (before the move to NY) and got a 45-70 barrel while it was there.  Now lockup seems to be consistent across the shelf.   I am now a happy camper.  Here are a couple of pictures of the results after getting it back in June.  I know one session does not mean eveything but it is so much better than before.  With luck I will be able to shoot again in December (neck problems then surgery) and see if it was a fluke.  Also depends on when the range will be open again.  IKE did a number on this little island called Galveston but it will come back, always has.
The 3 shot target was the 30-30 at 100 yards with Federal 150's
The other is conglomeration of 45-70's    lower 3 are Hornady leverevolution  mid-left 3 are Remington 300 grain, both at 100 yards. The other 5 were a combination of 50 yard shots or shots for scope adjustment.
I was really surprized that the Hornady were so much lower than the Remington as they were shot at the same target with no scope adjustment.

Not always, but generally the higher velocity rounds will print lower than a slow slug, until you get out there a ways. This is because of muzzle jump. The slower slug will take more time to come out of the muzzle and the muzzle is going up, so it prints higher. This is for shorter ranges, as the range increases, so does the bullet drop, at a certain range, depending on the velocity difference and bullet weight, their paths will cross and the slower one will print lower than the faster one as the range increases. Good shooting on the 30-30 and your 45-70, nothing to complain about there. Good Shooting and Good Luck.
Great men have vision and resolve to make dreams come true.

That's a beautiful group with the Hornadys.  LaOtto, I guess I had known that, but never realized why.  Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge.  Pete.

Thanks for the replys.  I have not been able to shoot since July but if the doctor gives the OK then the first part of Dec. its back to a range even if not here.  If that goes well then the 30-30 gets to go hunting.  Probably less stress on the neck from the 30-30 than my bolt 270 so I will give it it first try at actual game (whitetail).
